Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 01/23/09 and Monday, 01/26/09. ALMETRIS DUREN RESIDENCE HALL, 2624 Whitis Theft: A Dell Studio laptop computer, a USB thumb drive and a Micro SD drive were stolen form an unsecured 6th floor study lounge while the owner left the room to use the restroom. The owner freely admitted to having heard the recommendation to never leave personal property unattended during a new student orientation session, but believed his property would not be stolen as he would only leave it for a “few minutes.” Loss value: $700.00. Occurred on 01/24/09 between 3:15 p.m. and 3:18 p.m. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red River Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: Two UT students, who were both under the age of 21, were reported as pouring alcohol from a flask into cups while in attendance at the UT / Texas A&M basketball game. Both subjects had an odor of alcohol coming form their breath. One of the two students was in possession of the flask containing an alcoholic beverage. Occurred on 01/24/09 at 9:20 p.m. GATEWAY APARTMENTS, 1618 West 6th Street Criminal Mischief (4 counts): Windows to four different cars that were parked and unattended on the apartment complex had been broken. Evidence at the scene suggested the windows had been punctured by a small round object. A copper colored small metal ball was found on the seat of one of the vehicles. Repair cost: $150 to 250 per vehicle. Reported on 01/24/09 at 3:49 a.m. GUADALUPE GARAGE, 1616 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed walking down the level 2 ramp of the parking garage while carrying two bed rolls. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for a curfew violation. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 01/24/09 at 8:33 a.m. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Attempted Theft / Criminal Trespass / Possession of Controlled Substance / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was reported as pulling on a bicycle while it was secured to a bicycle rack located on the west side of the dormitory. The reporting person stated the subject was pulling on the bicycle while holding a gold colored tool. The subject was found to be in possession of several tools commonly used to defeat bicycle locks; including a gold colored pair of bolt cutters. The subject was also found to be in possession of several bicycle parts that appeared to have been taken from unidentified bicycles. In addition, the subject had two handcuff keys, a small metal pipe with copper mesh stuffed in one end (commonly referred to as a “Crack Pipe”), several pieces of identification cards & gift cards in other people's names and one tablet of Oxycodone. The subject was also found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for riding a bicycle on a sidewalk – I wonder if that bike was stolen too? Reported on 01/24/09 at 5:08 p.m. LIVING LEARNING CENTER BUILDING C, 2610 Whitis Credit Card Abuse: An unknown subject used a 1st floor resident's debit card information to make several unauthorized charges. The resident kept the debit card inside his dormitory room during the suspected time the information was taken. The total amount of unauthorized charges had not been determined at the time of the report. Reported on 01/23/09 at 10:00 p.m. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Theft: A blue Jake the Snake Kona bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to the bicycle racks located on the west side of the building. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on 01/23/09 between 9:15 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Credit Card Abuse: A UT student left a 2nd floor copy center after making duplications. The student did not retrieve his credit card he had used to purchase the copies. The student had the credit card cancelled upon discovery of it being missing, but not before a total of $885.00 worth of unauthorized charges were made on the credit card. Occurred on 01/22/09 between 2:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. SAN JACINTO GARAGE, 2401 San Jacinto Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The left window was broken out of a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro while the vehicle was parked and unattended on the 1st floor of the garage. The head unit and faceplate to a Pioneer in-dash car stereo was stolen from the vehicle. Repair cost: $150.00. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred between 01/23/09 at 12 noon and 01/24/09 at 2:45 p.m. 2700 Nueces Public Intoxication / Evading: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was reported as a welfare concern as the reporting person, a cab driver, had been flagged down by the student. The student handed the cab driver a Texas Driver's License that was issued to another person. The student said something that was not understood by the driver, before the student staggered away. When the officer attempted to stop the student, she took flight and ran from the officer. Once the student was stopped, she showed classic signs of intoxication, including a loss of memory as she could only name the drinking establishments she had visited as bar 1,2,3,4…in one of the many establishments she obtained an apparently new drink called “a taco” as that is one of the many drinks she listed as having consumed. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was a danger to herself. Occurred on 01/26/09 at 3:05 a.m. 2500 San Antonio Driving Under the Influence by a Minor / Possession of Alcoholic Beverage in a Motor Vehicle: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving a silver Chrysler 300 the wrong way on a one-way roadway. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, but not to the point the subject was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Two open bottles of beer were found inside the vehicle. Occurred on 01/24/09 at 2:07 a.m. 2700 San Jacinto Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (3 counts): A UT student, and two non-UT subjects were observed loitering in and beside a parked car. All three subjects were under the age of 21 and found to have consumed alcoholic beverages. Occurred on 01/25/09 at 3:48 a.m. 2600 Whitis Public Intoxication: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was found needing the help of two friends to come to his feet. As it turned out, the student should have brought more than two friends as he again fell to the ground after his friends had helped him up. The student was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages to the point he was a danger to himself. In lieu of being arrested, the student was issued a citation for the consumption of alcohol by a minor and turned over to his friends. Occurred on 01/25/09 at 1:53 a.m. 300 West 27th Street Public Intoxication: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was observed using the wall of a building to maintain a quasi-horizontal orientation as he attempted to walk along the sidewalk. The subject had a difficult time with the date as he believed it was “January 1st of the 23rd.” The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a physical endangerment to himself. Occurred on 01/24/09 at 1:30 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 51 alarm calls, 9 unsecured door reports, 2 suspicious activity reports, 1 stuck elevator, 5 medical emergency calls, 1 suspicious odor call, 1 suspicious noise call, 1 collision report, 1 found property reports and 4 public assist requests between 01/23/09 and 01/26/09. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
