Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 01/26/09 and Tuesday, 01/27/09. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. ****Administrative Message**** According to local forecast, today's weather may deteriorate throughout the day and into tomorrow morning's commute. That being said, make sure you leave enough commute time in the morning. Bundle up and be safe! SIMKINS HALL DORMITORY, 2501 San Jacinto Attempted Theft: A UT student reported seeing a subject trying to break a lock the student had used to secure the student's bicycle to a bicycle rack. When the student asked the subject what he was doing, the subject stated the bicycle belonged to him. After the student exclaimed ownership of the bicycle, the subject walked away. The subject was described as a white male approximately 35 years old, approximately 5'9," with a scruffy graying beard, and was wearing a dark sweater, rolled up sweatpants, a baseball cap, and carrying a large blue backpack. Occurred on 01/26/09 at 8:00 p.m. 1900 San Jacinto Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle / Criminal Trespass Warnings (2 counts): A non-UT subject was stopped for disregarding a stop sign by failing to stop at the designated place and for a defective rear light while driving a gold Buick 4-door. The officer observed the front seat passenger, also a non-UT subject, to be in possession of an open can of beer. Several pieces of marijuana debris were observed on the front floor board of the vehicle. A second passenger, who was also a non-UT subject, was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for failure to maintain proof of financial responsibility. A stereo face plate that did not belong to the vehicle's stereo was found inside the vehicle along with a cigar tube containing marijuana residue. Two of the vehicle's four occupants were admitted auto burglars. Those two subjects were issued written criminal trespass warning citations. Furthermore, after the subject with the warrant was booked into jail, the transporting officer examined the patrol car's back seat and discovered the subject was able to remove one of his socks. The rolled-up sock that contained .15 ounces of marijuana. Occurred on 01/27/09 at 2:01 a.m. 2300 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated: A UT student was stopped for speeding while driving a black 1999 Pontiac Firebird. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 01/26/09 at 1:53 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 alarm calls, 2 medical emergency calls, 1 welfare concern report, 2 light surveys, 1 found property reports and 3 public assist requests between 01/26/09 and 01/27/09. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
