Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 01/27/09 and Wednesday, 01/28/09. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. FACILITIES COMPLEX BUILDING 1, 1301 East Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject, who is an ex-spouse of an employee who works inside the building, was reported as walking around the 3rd floor. The subject was located at a nearby bus stop and was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 01/27/09 at 9:15 a.m. JESSE H. JONES COMMUNICATIONS CENTER – BUILDING B, 2504 Whitis Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was reported as having been “grunting” in a 2nd floor men's restroom stall for approximately 2 hours. The subject showed signs of intoxication as his balance resembled more of a weeble-wobble then that of a sober adult. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. Reported on 01/27/09 at 2:44 p.m. JESTER CENTER ACADEMIC, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning (3 counts): Three non-UT subjects were reported as asking people for money on the west side of the building. All three subjects were issued written criminal trespass warning citations. Occurred on 01/27/09 at 7:09 p.m. PRATHER HALL DORMITORY, 305 East 21st Street Theft: A black Trek bicycle was stolen when it was secured with a u-lock and an independently locking cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the north side of the dormitory. The cut cable lock was found on the ground by the bicycle rack. The u-lock was not located. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred between 01/26/09 at 7:00 p.m. and 01/26/09 at 10:00 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: This is a most disturbing development. In Officer Halstead's and my experiences as a UT Police Officers (some 37 years worth), this is only the fourth time that he and I have heard of someone having their bicycle stolen while it was secured with both a u-lock and a cable lock. In two of the previous cases, the locks were not properly used to secure the bicycle. In any event, in previous cases of both locks being defeated, overall bicycle theft numbers were high. This could be a sign of rising bicycle theft numbers. It is still our contention that using both a u-lock and an independently locking cable lock is the best method to secure your bicycle. When securing your bicycle, make sure the u-lock secures the front wheel and bike frame to the bicycle lock. The independently locking cable lock should secure the rear wheel and bike frame to the bicycle rack. As always, lets all keep an eye on our neighbors' bicycles. If you report suspicious or criminal activity that leads to the apprehension of a thief, UTPD will buy you the pizza of your choice and have it delivered to you when you want it. WALTER WEBB HALL, 2500 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning / Failure to Identify / Criminal Trespass / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: Two non-UT subjects were reported as camping in the covered parking garage located on the west side of the building. The two subjects were found sharing an alcoholic beverage. One of the two subjects provided his identification. That subject had not previously been issued a criminal trespass warning so he was given such a written warning and released. The other subject provided a name and date of birth that turned out to be fictitious. When that subject's name was determined, it was discovered he had previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning and was subsequently taken into custody. That subject was found to be in possession of two hypodermic needles that he admitted he used to consume cocaine and heroin. Occurred on 01/27/09 at 6:45 p.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 12 alarm calls, 2 suspicious odor calls, 1 suspicious package report, 1 light survey, 1 lost property report, 2 unsecured door reports and 3 public assist requests between 01/26/09 and 01/27/09.
