Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 01/29/09 and Friday, 01/30/09. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE The University of Texas Police Department will be hosting the 5th annual Citizen's Police Academy. The CPA will be held every Monday night beginning February 23, 2009 (There will be no class during Spring Break Week). The academy will end April 13, 2009 with a graduation ceremony. If you are interested in attending the next Citizen's Police Academy, contact Capt. Don Verett at 232-6444 or don.verett@austin.utexas.edu. If you have any information pertaining to any of these cases or other criminal or suspicious activity, please contact the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. HARRY RANSOM CENTER, 300 West 21st Street Unauthorized Solicitation: An unknown subject approached a UT student and asked for money. The subject stated he was a UT staff member and needed money to get to his home in San Marcos, Texas as his car had broken down. The subject gave the student a name, telephone number and e-mail address and promised to pay the money back. When the student stated he did not have money on him, the subject suggested a near-by ATM machine. The two went to the ATM machine where the student withdrew an undetermined amount of money and gave it to the subject. The student later learned there was no UT staff member by the name of the subject - makes one wonder if the telephone number and e-mail address are fictitious as well. The subject was described as a white male, approximately 5'08" tall, dark (possibly brown) hair and wearing a khaki colored baseball cap, gray t-shirt and blue jeans with holes in the rear. The subject was carrying a black backpack. Reported on 01/29/09 at 4:28 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Solicitation is not allowed on The University of Texas Campus. If you are approached by someone asking you for money contact the police department. In no situation should you go with a stranger to an ATM to retrieve money. This creates a potentially dangerous situation. If you find yourself in this type of solicitation situation, simply tell the person you don't have any money on you and walk away. Again, call the police to report the suspicious activity. Once on the other side of the road, the student walked to a light pole, struck it with his hand then realized he held no ill will toward the pole as he needed that pole and others to maintain his balance. The subject was stopped shortly after walking into the passenger door of a parked patrol car. The subject obviously knew his destination as he was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. Occurred on 01/30.09 at 3:19 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 11 alarm calls, 1 unsecured door report, 1 welfare concern report and 3 medical emergency calls between 01/29/09 and 01/30/09.
