Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday 02-13-09 and Tuesday, 02-17-09. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE This the Last Week to Sign Up The University of Texas Police Department will be hosting the 6th Citizen's Police Academy Class. The CPA will be held every Monday night beginning February 23, 2009 (There will be no class during Spring Break Week). The academy will end April 13, 2009 with a graduation ceremony. BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING BUILDING, 107 West Dean Keeton Suspicious Person: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject sleeping inside an unoccupied 4th floor office. The staff member contacted the building manager. The manager approached the subject and determined the subject did not belong in the building and escorted him out of the building. During the investigation, the manager informed the officer that the unknown subject might be affiliated with UT since he was not dirty in appearance, but was concerned when the subject became inquisitive and wanted to know if the BME was secured at night. Occurred on: 2-13-09, at 1:27 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: There are times when it seems like it is no big deal to investigate a sleeping person inside an office. There are other times when that sleeping person needs to talk to a police officer. CENTENNIAL PARK, 1600 Red River Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was discovered was discovered in a secluded area of the park. During the investigation, the officers soon discovered that the subject had an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-15-09, at 9:03 PM. ERNEST COCKRELL HALL, 301 East Dean Keeton Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member heard the sound of breaking glass and discovered the glass door leading into the library was broken and saw a UT student standing outside the locked door. During the investigation, the UT student informed the officer that he had become frustrated when he discovered the library was closed. After becoming frustrated, he took his closed fist and struck the glass pane, breaking it. The student was taken into custody. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 2-16-09, at 9:56 PM. LITTLEFIELD DORMITORY, 201 West Dean Keeton Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: UT police officers responded to a report of a passed out student inside a 3rd floor dormitory room. Upon arrival, the officers located a UT student that was having a difficult time remaining awake and attempted to communicate with a mush-mouthed dialect. The officers learned that the subject had been at a friend's house drinking an unknown amount of alcohol. Austin EMS was notified and treated the subject for alcohol poisoning at the scene. The student was transported to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Charges are pending. Occurred on: 2-14-09, at 2:45 AM. PARLING HALL, #2 South Mall Theft: An Apple iPhone 3G was reported stolen from an unsecured first floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned, from another staff member, an unknown subject had been seen wandering through the building as if he were lost. When approached by the staff member, the subject asked where the bathroom was. The unknown suspicious subject was described as: Black male, late 20's, 6'-0", thin build, short cropped hair, and was wearing blue jeans and a white t-shirt. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 2-13-09 between, 9:10 AM and 9:26 AM. PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported the theft of her brown leather wallet, $20.00 in cash, credit card, personal identification and her car keys. During the investigation, the officers learned that the victim had left her property in care of another UT student to watch while she took a break from studying. The friend stated she had been approached by an unknown subject who had asked her for a cigarette. After giving the subject a cigarette, she noticed her friend's wallet was missing. The unknown subject was described as: Black male, 20's, very muscular, with a large tattoo on the side of his neck. The officers searched the area and were unable to locate the subject. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 2-15-09, between 7:30 PM and 7:45 PM. 100 BLOCK 21st STREET Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor (3 Counts) / Purchase of Alcohol for a Minor: A UT student was observed operating a motor vehicle at a high rate of speed through campus, while committing additional traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle. As the traffic investigation continued, the officer noted that the driver's eyes were bloodshot and watery. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver did not display enough clues that would indicate his level of intoxication. The driver was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor. During a search of the subject's vehicle, the officers discovered a purple bag that contained a small amount of marijuana and a silver pipe with burned marijuana residue in the bowl. The officers issued the driver a field release citation for the Possession of Marijuana as well as Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. As the primary officer was investigating the driver, a second officer discovered the passengers were in possession of several open containers of alcohol. The officers soon learned that all of the passengers were under the legal age of 21. All three passengers were issued field release citations for Possession of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 2-14-08, at 4:47 AM. 100 BLOCK 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT police officer observed a UT student staggering and having a difficult time maintaining his navigational markers. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and learned he was under the legal age of 21. The subject was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor once the officer determined the subject was not a danger to himself or to others. Occurred on: 2-14-09, at 4:27 AM. 100 BLOCK 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Failure to Identify / Possession of more than One Valid Driver's License: A UT police officer observed a UT student almost fall, had it not been for the perfectly placed retaining wall that the student used to prevent herself from falling. During the investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The student presented the officer with an out of state driver's license that was blurry and hard to read. The officer noted that the license appeared to be fictitious and asked the subject for her name and date of birth. The subject recited the information on the license she had present and claimed the information was correct. The officer was able to obtain the subject's information, but the date of birth was different and made the subject younger than the age given on the driver's license. The subject allowed the officer to search her wallet, the officer discovered her correct driver's license and the license of another subject in her possession. The student continued to stick to her story, even as the officer was holding her correct DL. Upon closer examination, the officer discovered the blurry license had been tampered with so the date of birth was altered. The subject was taken into custody for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Failure to Identify / Possession of more than One Valid Driver's License and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-14-09, at 3:38 AM. 100 BLOCK 21st STREET Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT police officer observed a subject attempting to maintain hand contact with a well placed retaining wall (Yes the wall from the previous entry) in order to fight the effects of earth's gravity. During the investigation, the officer learned that the subject was returning from a fraternity party were he had been consuming adult beverages. The officer also learned that the subject was also under the legal age of 21 when he consumed said adult beverages. The subject was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 2-14-09, at 1:30 AM. 300 BLOCK WEST 24th STREET Public intoxication: A UT student was reported passed out inside a planter box next to the Biology Building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject holding his head in his hands. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the student's breath. The subject denied having consumed any alcohol, even while a plastic flask protruded from his pocket. Austin EMS was contacted due to the subject's level of intoxication. The student was transported to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Charges for Public Intoxication were filed. Occurred on: 2-16-09, at 12:30 AM. 1800 BLOCK TRINITY Assist Outside Agency (2 Counts) / Driving While License Suspended: A UT police officer observed a Chevy Blazer commit several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer discovered that neither the non-UT driver or non-UT passenger were in possession of their state issued driver's license. The officer discovered the reason why the driver did not have his driver's license with him…a judge had suspended his license. As the traffic investigation continued, the officer soon learned that not only did the driver have several outstanding outside agency arrest warrants, but the passenger as well. Both subjects were taken into custody for the outstanding warrants and were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-17-09, at 3:16 AM. 2000 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT police officer observed two UT students standing over a third UT student that appeared to be passed out between two parked vehicles. As the officer approached in his marked patrol vehicle the two standing students became very nervous and attempted to loaded the passed out student into a parked vehicle. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the passed out student. Austin EMS was notified and treated the subject at the scene as the student drooled uncontrollable and began having an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. After being evaluated by EMS, the subject was released to his two sober friends, but not before receiving a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 2-14-09, at 3:00 AM. 2500 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT police officer observed two students standing next to a bush. Upon closer inspection, the officer discovered one of the students was providing alcohol enriched compost to the university's owned flora. As the investigation continued, the officer learned both students were under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol at an off campus location. The officer issued both subjects a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 2-14-09, at 2:15 AM. 2900 LAFAYETTE Driving While Intoxicated: A UT police officer observed a vehcile attempting to create a third lane of traffic from the two existing lanes while traveling at a high rate of speed. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-15-09, at 11:57 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 73 alarm calls, 6 suspicious activity reports, 4 suspicious persons reports, 7 unsecured door reports, 8 medical emergency, and 8 public assist between 2-13-09, 2-17-09 Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime.
