Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 02-17-09 and Friday, 02-20-09. ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE This the Last Week to Sign Up The University of Texas Police Department will be hosting the 6th Citizen's Police Academy Class. The CPA will be held every Monday night beginning February 23, 2009 (There will be no class during Spring Break Week). The academy will end April 13, 2009 with a graduation ceremony. BLANTON MUSEUM OF ART, 1900 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning (3 Counts): A UT police officer observed three non-UT subjects skateboarding on the west side of the building. During the investigation, all three subjects were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings and were escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-18-09, at 7:50 PM. BRACKENRIDGE APARTMENTS, 3300 Lake Austin blvd Burglary of motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered the driver's side window of a Toyota van broken. During the investigating, the officer learned a Sony GPS locator was taken from the vehicle after being left in plain view. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 2-17-09 and 2-18-09. COLORADO BUILDING, 200 West 7th Street Public Intoxication: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject running from the Colorado Parking Garage into an on-coming lane of traffic. The subject was having a difficult time maintaining his balance as he attempted to run. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted several signs of intoxication. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-19-09, at 2:23 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Assist Outside Agency / Failure to Identify / Theft (2 Counts): A UT staff member observed an unauthorized subject inside one of the concessions stands. When the non-UT subject saw the police officers approaching, she left the stand and attempted to leave the area. During the investigation, the officers soon learned the subject was not being truthful about her name and date of birth when her ID card was located inside a wallet. Soon thereafter, the officers learned the subject had 7 outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. Five of which were felonies. As the investigation continued, the officers learned the concessions stand, where the subject had left, was short when the money was counted. During a search of the subject, officers located some of the missing money. Officers learned the first non-UT subject had been leaving the stand and meeting a second subject during the event. Officers located the remaining missing money with the second subject. Both subjects were taken into custody and were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-18-09, at 7:55 PM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Aggravated Robbery: Two unknown subjects approached two UT students on the northwest portion of the building. The unknown subjects demanded the students to hand over their wallets, purse, and cellular telephones, while at gun point. During the investigation, the officers learned that the unknown subjects matched the descriptions of the suspects involved in similar offenses throughout the city. The suspects were described as: First Suspect: Black male, 5'-9", thin build, with short cut hair. The subject was last seen wearing a white t-shit and blue jeans. Second Suspect: Black male, 5'-10", thin build, with short cut hair. The subject was last seen wearing a white t-shit and blue jeans. Occurred on: 2-19-09, at 9:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: These two students did a good job in not getting hurt by looking at their options and complying with the demands of the suspects. By knowing your options or even having a game plan helps with these types of situations. The University of Texas Police Department would like to help you develop a plan with these suggestions: Be aware of your surroundings. Do not become engaged in activities that will distract your attention, talking on a cell phone or wearing your mugger magnets. If you stay late into the evening hours, stay in groups as there is safety in numbers. TEXAS UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A brown leather purse, containing $10.00 in cash, a Motorola cellular telephone, debit card and personal ID were stolen from a table located on the east patio. During the investigation, the officer learned that the victim had fallen asleep for approximately ten minutes while her purse was next to her. Loss value: $290.00. Occurred on: 2-18-09, between 2:30 PM and 2:40 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: The Texas Union is a popular building for thieves. Many of these thieves are waiting for an opportunity, and many times their victim never sees it coming. Sleeping is a public places increases your risk of becoming a victim. WOOLRICH LABS, 210 East 24th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student heard a non-UT subject attempting to unlock his office door. When the student opened the door to see who was attempting to enter his office, a surprised non-UT subject turned and ran away. During the investigation, the student observed the subject outside of WRW as officers were actively searching the area. The non-UT subject informed the officers, he was there to take a trip down memory lane. The officer learned that the subject was in possession of several UT keys. These keys were confiscated and the subject was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning as a memento of his trip down memory lane. Occurred on: 2-18-09, at 10:12 PM. 300 BLOCK INNER CAMPUS DRIVE Public Intoxication: A UT police officer observed a UT student attempting to walk across the street on round bottom shoes. When the student saw the officer the student attempted to flee but could not defy earth's gravity. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and was bleeding from one of many falls. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene and was transported to a local area hospital. Charges for Public Intoxication were filed. Occurred on: 2-20-09, at 2:15 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 Counts): A UT police officer observed a blue Jeep run through a stop sign. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests to the driver. The driver did not display enough clues that would have indicated she was intoxicated. While administering the sobriety tests to the driver, the odor of alcohol was still present inside the vehicle. Officers determined the source of the odor was coming from the passengers still inside the vehicle. The officers discovered the passengers were both under the legal age of 21. While the driver was being issued a field release citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor, both passengers were being issued field release citations for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. All three subjects were released at the scene and the vehicle was impounded. Occurred on: 2-18-09, at 2:39 AM. 2400 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Assist Outside Agency: A UT police officer observed a white Nissan run through a stop sign. During the traffic investigation, the officer soon learned the driver, a UT student, had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding warrant and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-19-09, at 1:40 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 62 alarm calls, 2 suspicious activity reports, 2 suspicious persons reports, 7 unsecured door reports, 3 medical emergency, and 8 public assist between 2-17-09, 2-20-09 Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime.
