Report for 04/02/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 04-01-09 and Thursday, 04-02-09. *****New Resource***** Recently, The UT Student Government developed a new web page to serve as a resource for a variety of safety, security, health and wellness resources for The University of Texas. The webpage is called Be Safe, Texas. This website provides a litany of information about services offered to UT faculty, staff and students. Please take the time to visit this new website to see what resources are available to you. Be Safe, Texas can be found at http://www.utexas.edu/besafe/ BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Criminal Mischief: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had used an unknown tool to attempt to gain entry into his vehicle. The attempted entry caused damage to the rear driver's side window. The student inventoried his vehicle and did not discover any property missing. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 4-01-09, at 5:30 PM. REC SPORTS CENTER, 400 East 20th Street Theft: A black Apple iPhone was stolen after being left unsecured and unattended on a bleacher while the former owner played basketball. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 4-01-09, between 8:45 PM and 9:56 PM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Evading Arrest or Detention / Disregard a Stop Sign: A UT police officer observed a UT student fail to stop a stop sign while riding a bicycle. The officer ordered the subject to stop several times. The student turned to see the officer giving chase. The student continued to peddle north, only this time with a little more urgency. The officer stopped the student and learned that the student needed to turn in a lab report before it was deemed late. The officer issued the subject a field release citation for Disregarding the Stop Sign and chose not to take the subject into custody for Evading but referred the student to the Dean of Student's Office. Occurred on: 4-01-09, at 10:00 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: This officer showed a lot of discretion in this case. A bicycle is considered a vehicle in the State of Texas. Since it is a motor vehicle all bicyclists are required to obey the same traffic laws as if they were driving a motorized vehicle. Chapter 13 of the Texas Department of Public Safety driver's handbook spells out the responsibilities of a bicyclist. When it comes to the safety and welfare of the students, staff and faculty at the University of Texas, getting a late lab report turned in is not worth going to jail for. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 17 alarm calls, 3 unsecured door reports, 2 welfare concern reports, 2 medical emergencies, and 2 suspicious activity reports between 4-01-09 and 4-02-09. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or via e-mail to Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
