Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 04/03/09 and Monday, 04/06/09. ALMETRIS DUREN RESIDENCE HALL, 2624 Whitis Theft: A blue Specialized Hard Rock bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the northeast side of the dormitory. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between 04/03/09 at 8:30 p.m. and 04/04/09 at 1:00 p.m. CONNALLY CENTER FOR JUSTICE, 726 East Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as possibly being “unconscious” on a couch. The subject was found lying on the couch. The subject stated he believed he has been sleeping on a couch in the city library. The subject stated he had been drinking with friends the night before and had gotten into a fight with his friends before he end of the night. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 04/04/09 at 8:41 a.m. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red River Assault by Contact / Assault by Threat: A patron of a concert asked another patron, who was seated behind the first, to refrain form using profane language while shouting about the late start time for a concert. The patron with the sailor mouth then “poked” the first patron and threatened to kick his…well his dairyaire – that's Texas for hind quarters. The first patron was offended by the poke, the use of language and the threat. Occurred on 05/05/09 at 9:00 p.m. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A UT student placed his black sling bag on the bleachers beside the 2nd floor basketball courts while he played basketball. When the student finished playing basketball he discovered his bag had been moved from where he had placed it. A silver i-Phone, $35 in cash, an Olympus voice activated audio recorder, a gift card, 4 bank / credit cards and various identification cards were stolen from the bag. The student had observed a subject sitting next to his bag while he was playing basketball. That subject was described as a white male, approximately 5'9” tall with a medium build and was wearing a black tank top shirt, blue shorts and had a goatee. Loss value: $310.00. Occurred on 04/03/09 between 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: I am beginning to think that part of the problem is that there are not enough people getting the memo that thefts happen at the basketball courts. To that end, I implore each of you to do your part to spread this message. Share the knowledge that thieves target the basketball courts because they know athletes leave their property unattended during a game. Encourage your friends, family and neighbors to leave their property at home when they go to the gym or to lock their property in a locker while working out. If nothing else; encourage everyone you know to sign-up for the Campus Watch and they can read these messages themselves. JESTER CENTER EAST, 203 East 21st Street Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Possession of Alcohol by a Minor: UT Police Officers responded to a report of the odor of burning marijuana coming from a 1st floor dormitory room. Upon arrival, officers found three UT students and two non-UT subjects inside the dormitory room. All five subjects were under the age of 21. One of the non-UT subjects was found to be in possession of .06 ounces of marijuana. One of the students was found to be in possession of a glass pipe commonly used to smoke marijuana. 25 empty cans of Pure Whip nitrous oxide gas and a metal dispensing device for the cans were found inside the room. All of the subjects admitted to having inhaled the nitrous oxide gas. A bottle of vodka and a can of beer were also found inside the room. Occurred on 04/04/09 at 2:00 a.m. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Assault with Injury: A UT student, who was hosting three out-of-town friends, became upset with her three friends as they had left her at a downtown club. When the three friends and the student returned to the student's dormitory room, the four “friends” began to argue. At some point during the argument, personal items were thrown about and into the hallway of the student's 3rd floor dormitory room. One of the “friends” had the dormitory room door closed on her hand as she attempted to enter the room after retrieving some of her property from the hallway. The foursome left the room and rode the elevator to the first floor. As the “friends” tried to exit the elevator, the student blocked the elevator door and then hit one of her ”friends” in the face. Occurred on 04/04/09 at 3:38 a.m. Social Commentary The saying, “With friends like this, who needs enemies?” comes to mind. MIKE A. MYERS TRACK & SOCCER STADIUM, 707 Clyde Littlefield Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as soliciting candy bar sales outside of the north entry gate during a track meet. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 04/03/09 at 12:21 p.m. MIKE A. MYERS TRACK & SOCCER STADIUM, 707 Clyde Littlefield Theft: A blue T-Mobil Samsung cellular telephone was stolen when it was left under the east stands of the stadium during a track and field meet. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on 04/04/09 at approximately 2:50 p.m. MOORE-HILL HALL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was reported as having fallen down a flight of stairs. The student stated he believed he had consumed 16 alcoholic beverages. The student was obviously under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. Criminal Charges were not filed as Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport the student to a local hospital. Occurred on 04/05/09 at 3:53 a.m. PARKING LOT 40, 2500 Red River Theft: The front two hubcaps were stolen from a parked car while the owner attended a meeting in the Thompson Conference Center. Loss value: $153.00. Occurred on 04/01/09 between 12:50 p.m. and 2:00 P.M. PARKING LOT 80, 1900 Red River Street Graffiti: Black paint was used to write words, letters and to draw images on a brick retaining wall located on the west side of the parking lot. Removal cost: $75.00. Reported on 04/06/09 at 4:12 a.m. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 North IH-35 Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject was found sleeping inside of his illegally parked vehicle. The subject was found to have 10 outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for various offenses. The subject was also found to be in possession of a multi-colored glass pipe with burned marijuana residue and .185 ounces of marijuana. PARKING LOT 106, 2200 Chicon Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as soliciting people for money. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 04/03/09 at 11:22 a.m. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Mischief: The left front window was broken out of a black Nissan Altima while the vehicle was parked on the 5th level of the parking garage. No items inside the vehicle were removed or disturbed. Repair cost: $150.00. Occurred between 04/01/09 at 4:00 p.m. and 04/06/09 at 12 midnight. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Consumption of Alcohol By A Minor: A non-UT subject, who was under the age of 21, was found sleeping on the west side of the building. The subject was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages, but not to the point he was deemed to have been a danger to himself or others. Occurred on 04/05/09 at 2:17 a.m. 800 East Clyde Littlefield Reckless Driving / Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Deliver: A non-UT subject was stopped for swerving left of the center line and allowing a rear passenger to hang out of the rear window while driving a blue Buick. The front passenger of the vehicle was found to be in possession of marijuana, three empty plastic baggies and a portable scale. Occurred on 04/05/09 at 12:50 p.m. 2200 Robert Dedman Driving While Intoxicated / Open Container of Alcohol in a Vehicle: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving left of center and striking a center median island while driving a blue sport utility vehicle. The driver and the front seat passenger both had “wet spots” on the front of their pants. The driver stated the passenger had spilled his alcoholic beverage on both of their pants. The driver was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 04/04/09 at 8:13 p.m. 2000 San Jacinto Leaving the Scene Collision: A witness observed a white Toyota Camry strike a parked vehicle. The driver of the striking vehicle left the scene without leaving driver information. The witness left a note on the struck vehicle. The owner of the struck vehicle discovered fresh damage to the vehicle. With the help of he owner's insurance company and Facebook, the owner was able to determine the suspect is a UT student. Repair cost: $500.00. Occurred on 04/03/09 between 7:10 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. 2300 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Open Container of Alcohol in a Vehicle / Possession of a Controlled Substance / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was stopped for speeding while driving an Infiniti 4-door. The driver was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was found to be driving while intoxicated. The driver was found to also be in possession of .08 ounces of marijuana and a glass pipe containing burned marijuana residue. An open can of beer was also found in the vehicle. One of the passengers in the vehicle was found to be in possession of a plastic baggie containing cocaine. Another passenger in the vehicle was found to have three outstanding outside agency arrest warrants. Occurred on 04/05/09 at 2:41 a.m. 2100 Speedway Assist Outside Agency: A UT police officer observed a known offender walking toward a building where he had previously been arrested for criminal trespass. As the officer observed the subject, the dispatcher learned the subject had two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for theft and crossing an intersection against the pedestrian light. The subject was then stopped and taken into custody. Occurred on 04/05/09 at 9:10 a.m. 2100 Speedway Driving While License Suspended / Assist Outside Agency: A UT student was stopped after committing several traffic violations while driving a grey Lincoln. The student was found to have had his driver's license suspended. The student was also found to have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for previous traffic violations. Occurred on 04/03/09 at 10:52 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 35 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 15 “Police Help” call box activations, 5 unsecured window reports, 7 public assist requests, 1 accidental damage report, 1 lost and found child report, 1 light survey, 5 medical emergency assists and 3 suspicious activity reports between 4/03/09 and 4/06/09. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
