This safety belt education and enforcement initiative is designed to gain compliance with state law requiring the use of safety seat belt in motor vehicles. This campaign is a worth-while project as every year there are so many vehicle collisions that result in needless loss of life as the vehicle occupants were not wearing seat belts. While The UT Police Department is always mindful of this traffic law, particular attention will be given to the enforcement of this law in mid May. Stay tuned for specific dates and educational opportunities regarding this initiative. Until then, click it…or ticket. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject simply walking around inside the dinning area. The staff member recognized the subject from prior incidents inside the same area. The subject left the area, and the staff member followed the subject while talking to the police department. During the investigation, the officers located the subject on Gregory Gym Plaza. The officers soon learned that the subject had two prior Criminal Trespass Warnings that were several years old. The subject admitted he had been inside a restricted area, but that he had purchased some food while there. The officers issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him from the campus area. Occurred on: 4-09-09 at 9:33 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass / Failure to identify: Several UT students reported a non-UT subject was banging loudly on an 11th floor dormitory door. During the investigation, the officers located the subject on the 11th floor leaning against the door. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath from 10 feet away. As the investigation continued, the subject informed the officers that he was only 17 years old, and gave what was later to be determined a false name. The officers soon discovered that the subject had received a written Criminal Trespass Warning for the dormitory. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass / Failure to Identify. As the subject was being transported to Central Booking, he informed the officers that he thought if he lied that they would simply let him go home. His tearful begging and pleas for the officers to just take him home, went unanswered. Occurred on: 4-10-09, at 12:45 AM. PERRY CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A silver and black Toshiba satellite laptop computer was stolen from a 3rd floor study area after being left unattended. PCL was on that list. There are several thieves that like working a library. The primary reason, someone is going to leave their property unattended. As we move closer to finals, there will be a sharp spike in the number of thefts from this area. Either study in a group or take all of your property with you when you go visit your friends.
