Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 04/22/09 and Thursday, 04/23/09. ****Urban Bicycling Classes**** The UT Orange Bike Program offers free Urban Bicycling Classes throughout the course of regular semesters. The last class of this semester will be on Monday April 27, 2009 from 6 to 7 pm in Garrison 1.126. Class instructors are certified by the League of American Bicyclists. For more information about how this class can make you a safer cyclist, visit http://www.utenvironment.org/ RECREATIONAL SPORTS CENTER, 2001 San Jacinto Theft: A silver Giant Yukon bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the west side of the building. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred on 04/22/09 between 11:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject who had been arrested for criminal trespass in the same building just days before was reported as watching TV on the 3rd floor of the building. After the subject was located on the 4th floor, he found consistency in the law as he left the building in the same manner he had left the building last week. Occurred on 04/23/09 at 12 midnight. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft / Assist Outside Agency / Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as having stolen two biscuits from a 2nd floor restaurant. The subject was located by the bus stop in the 2300 block of Guadalupe. The witness positively identified the subject as the person who had stolen the biscuits. Unfortunately, the suspect was able to consume the evidence of the crime before officers stopped him. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for theft – imagine that. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was also issued a written criminal trespass warning. Lost and never to be recovered value: $4.44. Occurred on 04/22/09 at 9:31 a.m. 1900 San Jacinto Assist Outside Agency / Driving While License Invalid: A UT student was stopped for speeding while driving a silver Acura 2-door. The student was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for speeding. The student was also found to have been driving while his driver's license was invalid. Occurred on 04/23/09 at 2:21 a.m. 1900 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving an orange VW Bug (slug bug!) the wrong way on a one-way roadway. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 04/23/09 at 2:54 a.m. 2300 San Jacinto Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT student was stopped for driving a silver Honda Civic without wearing a safety restraint belt (seat belt). A four inch long multi-colored pipe containing burned marijuana residue was observed inside the vehicle. Occurred on 04/22/09 at 7:17 p.m. Crime prevention Tip: I am not sure if everyone recalls a previous announcement in the Campus Watch, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to reiterate. The UT Police Department will be participating in the “Click it or Ticket” campaign this year. While the UT Police Department is always mindful of such laws pertaining to public safety, officers from around this great state will initiate concentrated efforts to address seat belt usage on May 18th. 2300 San Jacinto Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol By A Minor: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was stopped for speeding while driving a silver Nissan Xterra. The student was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages, but not to the point he was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 04/23/09 at 3:29 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 19 alarm calls, 2 “Police Help” callbox activations, 1 medical emergency assist, 1 suspicious activity report, 2 unsecured door reports and 1 public assist request and between 04/22/09 and 04/23/09. If you are a faculty or staff member that has been affected by a crime, the UT Employee Assistance Program (471-3366) is available for counseling and referrals to other appropriate services. http://www.utexas.edu/hr/eap/ To view a map of the campus visit: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/maps/index.html RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that covers assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
