Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 04/28/09 and Wednesday, 04/29/09. Due to the resent national and local concerns about the Swine Flu, the University of Texas and the University of Texas Police Department would like to remind everyone of the following websites. These sites are designed to provide information to address your questions. http://www.utexas.edu/safety/ http://www.healthyhorns.utexas.edu/ ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Suspicious Activity: A UT staff member observed an unknown subject looking at the bicycles that were secured on the northeast side of the dormitory. The staff member observed the subject pulling on several bike locks, then jumped over a low retaining wall and walked away. The unknown subject was last seen walking north along Guadalupe. He was described as: White male, thin mustache, with short brown hair. The subject was last seen wearing John Lennon style sunglasses, black t-shirt and a black trench coat. Occurred on: 4-28-09, at 8:30 AM. ENGINEERING SCIENCE BUILDING, 2501 Speedway Theft: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had removed his bicycle seat from a Specialized mountain bicycle. Loss value: $ 15.00. Occurred between 4-28-09 and 4-29-09. Crime Prevention Tip: Some might wonder, “Why a bike seat?” It is a very simple answer. There was another bicycle in the area that was stolen. That owner might have taken their seat to discourage the theft. But bike thieves are innovative and will simply steal a seat in order to take their prize. ERNEST COCKRELL HALL, 301 East Dean Keeton Theft: An IBM laptop and a green computer bag were stolen from a first floor study table after being left unattended. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 4-28-09, between 2:00 PM and 3:30 PM. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Theft: A blue Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 4-28-09, between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: What can be said about cable locks? Not much from a law enforcement standpoint except “Good Luck.” From a thief's viewpoint, “Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.” As you have read, cable locks are ineffective in preventing a thief from stealing your property. A good rule of thumb is to incorporate a two-lock locking system. A U-shaped lock and a thick self-locking cable. W. C. HOGG BUILDING, #2 East Mall Theft: A red Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the northeast side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred on: 4-24-09, between 8:30 AM and 10:00 PM. 100 BLOCK INNER CAMPUS DRIVE Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered a booting device had been removed from a black Ford. During the investigation, the officer learned that the vehicle had been moved to a local area business. The officer located the owner of the vehicle and was issued a field release citation for Criminal Mischief. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 4-28-09, at 7:11 PM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Burglary on Motor Vehicle: A white dash mounted Nuvi GPS device was stolen from a Toyota Corolla after the passenger window was broken. Loss value: $50.00. Discovered on: 4-28-09, at 7:30 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 20 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 2 “Police Help” callbox activations, 3 medical emergency assists, 2 suspicious activity reports, 1 found property report and 1 welfare concern report between 04/28/09 and 04/29/09. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or via e-mail to Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
