Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 04-29-09 and Thursday, 04-30-09. Due to the resent national and local concerns about the Swine Flu, the University of Texas and the University of Texas Police Department would like to remind everyone of the following websites. These sites are designed to provide information to address your questions. http://www.utexas.edu/safety/ http://www.healthyhorns.utexas.edu/ SCAM ALERT Due to the resent national attention to the Swine Flu, it was in almost record time for the criminal element to being taking advantage of the situation. Below is a link from MSN.com warning of most email scams. http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/smartspending/?fpn=watch%20out%20for%20swine%20flu%20scams&GT1=33009 GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A silver Specialized Hard Rock mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. During the investigation, the officer discovered a witness who had observed an unknown Hispanic male standing in the bike racks. The student stated it had appeared as if the subject was unlocking a bike, but had thrown something into a corner before leaving. The unknown subject was described as: Hispanic male, 30 years of age, with short black hair. The subject was last seen wearing a red and white stripped polo style shirt. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred on: 4-29-09, between 4:30 PM and 6:15 PM. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Theft: An orange Mongoose mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between: 4-27-09, and 4-29-09. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street Theft: A blue Hewlett Packard laptop computer was reported stolen after being left unattended outside a second floor classroom during a scheduled event. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on: 4-29-09, at 7:07 PM. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Theft: A black tri-fold Dockers wallet containing $30.00 in cash, personal identification, and several credit cards was stolen from a second floor classroom after being left unattended on top of a backpack. Loss value: $35.00. Occurred on: 4-28-09, between 3:00 PM and 3:15 PM. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Public Intoxication: A UT police officer observed two UT students sitting on a planter. As both subjects attempted to stand up, one subject fell backwards into the planter box. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the breath of one of the students. The student was attempting to communicate to the officer using a mush mouth dialect that was hard to understand. While attempting to talk to the officer, the subject began having an extreme physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. The student began providing alcohol enriched compost into the planter box. The officer was able to understand that the student had been to a local downtown establishment. As the investigation continued the officer learned that the second student was sober and was attempting to take care of her inebriated co heart. The intoxicated student was released to her sober friend. Charges are pending, the student was referred to the Dean of Student's Office. Occurred on: 4-29-09, at 1:10 AM. 600 BLOCK CLYDE LITTLEFIELD Driving While Intoxicated: A UT police officer observed a white Honda committing several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver, a UT student, admitted that he had consumed more alcohol than what the legal limit would allow him to. The officer learned that the subject had consumed 7 to 8 beers in a short period of time. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the subject. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-30-09, at 2:00 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 21 alarm calls, 1 “Police Help” callbox activation, 1 medical emergency assist, 3 suspicious activity reports, 2 suspicious odor reports, 1 suspicious package report, 1 accidental damage report, 4 unsecured door reports, 1 light malfunction report and 1 public assist request report between 04-29-09 and 04-30-09.
