Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 05/12/09 and Wednesday, 05/13/09. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red River Criminal Trespass / Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject, who had attended a concert at the Events Center, was asked several times by events staff to leave the plaza overlooking the loading dock after the conclusion of the concert. The subject refused to leave the area. The subject continued his refusal even after he was ordered to leave by police officers working the event. When officers attempted to escort the subject from the property, the subject grabbed a handrail in defiance. Not surprisingly, the subject was also found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself and others. Occurred on 05/12/09 at 11:20 p.m. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red River Evading Arrest or Detention: Two people reported seeing a subject smoking marijuana from a glass pipe during a concert at the events center. A UT student, who matched the description of the suspect was located in the seating area provided by the witnesses. During the investigation, the student pushed one of the officers in the chest and fled the area on foot. With dogged determination, the officers pursued the student on foot out of the building, over a 6 foot retaining wall, through a parking lot and across 15th street. The officers briefly lost sight of the student, but quickly found him hiding in the bottom of a subterranean utility access point located in the 1400 block of IH-35. When the student was apprehended he was not in possession of any marijuana or the suspicious bulge the officers had previously seen in the student's rear pants pocket. Occurred on 05/12/09 at 8:44 a.m. JOHN W. HARGIS HALL, 1811 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as asking people for money. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 05/12/09 at 8:09 a.m. MOORE-HILL HALL DORMITORY, 214 East 21st Street Harassment: A resident of the dormitory reported receiving several unwanted and threatening text messages from a former acquaintance of hers. Reported on 05/12/09 at 11:39 a.m. ROBERT A. WELCH HALL, 105 East 24th Street Theft: A 35 gigabyte hard drive was stolen out of a Dell Inspiron laptop computer that was left inside an unsecured 5th floor laboratory. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between 05/11/09 at 7:00 p.m. and 05/12/09 at 10:30 a.m. 1800 Guadalupe Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject reported seeing a known bicycle thief at 19th Street and Guadalupe Street. The suspect has offered to sell stolen bicycles to the reporting person numerous times in the past. The suspect was found sitting at the bus stop in the 1800 block of Guadalupe Street. The subject was in possession of a bicycle, which he claimed was a birthday present form his siblings, a glass pipe with cocaine residue, hand tools, cable locks, chains, combination locks and several master lock keys. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for the possession of drug paraphernalia. Occurred on 05/12/09 at 5:30 p.m. 1800 Red River Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A non-UT subject was reported as “slumped over” in the driver's seat of a white VW Jetta while the car was parked on the west side of John Hargis Hall. The reporting person told the driver that he should not drive. At that time, the driver became “belligerent.” The responding officer stopped the subject as the subject was trying to drive out of the parking lot. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. The subject was found to be in possession of a hand rolled cigarette that contained marijuana. Occurred on 05/12/09 at 9:57 p.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 11 alarm calls, 3 “Police Help” call box activations, 3 fire alarm activations, 4 unsecured door reports, 3 medical emergency assists, 1 found property and 2 welfare concern assists between 05/12/09 and 05/13/09 If you are a faculty or staff member that has been affected by a crime, the UT Employee Assistance Program (471-3366) is available for counseling and referrals to other appropriate services. http://www.utexas.edu/hr/eap/ To view a map of the campus visit: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/maps/index.html RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
