Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 05/13/09 and Thursday, 05/14/09. ACES BUILDING, 201 East 24th Street Suspicious Person: A UT student reported an unknown subject has approached him twice asking for money after claiming to be a UT student and that his car was out of gas and parked inside a construction site. The student declined to give him any money, but has seen the same subject inside the ACES Building and other areas on campus. The unknown subject is described as: white male, 30 years of age, and short brown hair. The subject was last seen wearing a white long sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up and brown pants. The subject was carrying a black backpack. Occurred on: 5-13-09, at 1:55 PM. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2110 Speedway Theft: A bronze plaque measuring 11” x 8” was stolen from the “Hall of Honor” located on the second floor south portion of the building. Loss value: $300.00. Discovered on: 5-14-09, at 12:52 AM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject approached several UT students and began asking them for money. A UT staff member observed the subject's actions and notified the UT Police Department. During the investigation, the officers located the subject. The subject admitted that he was asking for money in order to take the bus. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 5-14-09, at 5:17 AM. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 510 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member had received several complaints about a patron attending the event. The staff member told the non-UT subject she was being ejected from the venue due to her noncompliance. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and informed her that she needed to leave. The subject refused. The officers took the subject into custody for Criminal Trespass and transported her to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-13-09, at 10:10 PM. WEST MALL , 2300 Guadalupe Theft: A UT student was approached by an unknown subject in January of 2009. The subject asked the student if he appeared to be a “nice guy.” The subject then persuaded the student to purchase a magazine subscription. By May 2009 the student had not received one magazine from the subscription she had purchased. Loss value: $38.00. Occurred in January 2009. Crime Prevention Tip: If it sounds too good to be true, chances are you just made someone's day. There are a number of different scams out there. One of the most common scams faced by college students across the country is the door to door salesmen. If you are interested in purchasing a magazine subscription, get a copy of that magazine and contact the company directly. 2300 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Criminal Trespass Warning / Evading Arrest or Detention / Failure to Identify: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject walking around inside the McCombs School of Business. The staff member followed the subject while notifying the UT Police Department. As officers were arriving to the area, the suspect ducked behind a kiosk to avoid being seen, however the staff member continued to provide the dispatchers with current information. The officers located the suspect and stopped him. While questioning the subject, the subject became very nervous and decided it was time to leave. The suspect took off running then tripped on a well placed curb, allowing the officer the opportunity to take the subject into custody. The suspect was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-13-09, at 1:13 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 11 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 4 unsecured door reports, 1 medical emergency assist, 2 suspicious activity reports and 2 public assists between 05/13/09 and 05/14/09 Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime.
