Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 05/15/09 and Tuesday, 05/19/09. ALMETRIS DUREN RESIDENCE HALL, 2624 Whitis Theft: UT police officers were summoned to the dormitory to take a report of the theft of two $100 dollar bills from a wallet that was inside an off-campus apartment during a party. The owner of the money had observed two residents of Duren Hall inside a private bedroom at the apartment party. The owner of the money confronted the two residents about the theft then followed them to Duren Hall. The investigation led to a confession of the theft by the two Duren Hall residents and a recovery of the money. Recovery value: $200.00. Reported on 05/16/09 at 2:00 a.m. APPLIED RESEARCH LABORATORY, 10000 Burnet Burglary: An office window located on the east side of the building was broken out. A carrying case containing a Dell laptop computer was stolen from the office. Loss value: $1,100.00. Repair cost: $250.00. Occurred between 05/15/09 and 05/18/09 at 9:30 a.m. ASHBEL SMITH HALL, 201 West 7th Street Public Intoxication / Evading Arrest or Detention / Assault by Threat: A non-UT subject was reported as acting in an erratic fashion and was armed with a knife. The subject fled on foot from responding officers and was chased to a nearby parking garage. The subject was quickly apprehended and found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself and others. When asked how much he had to drink, the subject asked if the officers wanted to know the answer in “millimeters” and stated he need a calculator to provide an answer. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 2:12 a.m. DOROTHY L. GEBAUER BUILDING, #4 East Mall Aggravated Robbery: While walking on the north side of the building, a UT student was approached from behind by an unknown subject. The subject grabbed the student and ordered the student to give him the student's backpack and cell phone. After the student handed over his property, the subject pushed the student to the ground and fled on foot. The student observed a folding knife in the subject's hand during the robbery. The student sustained injuries to his forehead, elbow and knee during the robbery. The subject was described as a white male in his 30's with a medium to dark complexion, approximately 5'10” tall with a thin build, short, dark brown hair, scruffy facial hair and wearing a camel colored jacket and jeans. The subject was described as being very dusty and dirty. Loss value: $450.00. Loss value: FACILITIES COMPLEX BUILDING 5, 1301 East Dean Keeton Burglary of Building / Criminal Trespass: While investigating a door alarm, an officer discovered a non-UT subject walking around the interior of the building while eating a sausage biscuit and drinking a Powerade. The subject stated he was not a current employee, but that he had applied for a job the previous week. The subject stated he entered the building through an unsecured door. The subject then stated he reached through an open window in a door way to unlock the door. It was then discovered the “open window” was in fact a broken out window. The subject was found to be in possession of a metal pipe commonly used to smoke crack cocaine. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 7:39 a.m. GATEWAY APARTMENTS, 1618 West 6th Street Interference with a 9-1-1 Call / Assault: A UT student, who is a resident of one of the apartments, knocked on the common wall shared with another apartment in an effort to silence a loud party. A few minutes later, the resident of the party apartment showed up on the front porch of the student's apartment and confronted the student about knocking on the common wall. The heated discussion resulted in the party thrower bumping the student and challenging the student to call 9-1-1. When the student moved toward his telephone to do just that, the party thrower then grabbed the student about the head and pushed him down before grabbing the student about the upper body which caused injury to the student. The party thrower then grabbed at the phone in an effort to disrupt the student's ability to dial 9-1-1. The student was then able to break free from the party thrower's grasp. The party thrower then fled the area. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 2:00 a.m. GEORGE I. SANCHEZ BUILDING, 1912 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject entered a 4th floor office. Several staff members asked the subject if they could help him. The subject stated he was looking for his girlfriend, but did not provide the name or office number for his girlfriend. The subject then fled the office and ran down a flight of stairs. One of the staff members followed the subject and called the police department on his cell phone. A UT police officer stopped the subject by the east exterior doors of the building. The subject's “girlfriend” was not affiliated with The University of Texas. The subject was not in possession of any property that was believed to be stolen. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning citation. Occurred on 05/18/09 at 12:32 p.m. HARRY RANSOM CENTER, 300 West 21st Street Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was found yelling words best not repeated in this entry while walking on the north side of the building. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for failing to appear in court for a pedestrian crossing against the light charge. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 7:27 p.m. J.J. “Jake” PICKLE RESEARCH CAMPUS, 10100 Burnet Burglary of Motor Vehicle: $3.00 in change was stolen from an ashtray located inside a parked and unsecured silver 2008 Chevrolet pick-up truck while the truck was parked near building 136. Loss value: $3.00. Occurred between 05/15/09 at 4:00 p.m. and 05/18/09 at 7:40 a.m. JESTER CENTER ACADEMIC, 201 East 21st Street Theft: An unknown brand yellow bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a u-lock and a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the west side of the building. The u-lock was located nearby in a locked position. The cable lock was not located. Loss value: $75.00. Occurred between 05/15/09 at 11:30 a.m. and 05/18/09 at 10:45 a.m. JESTER CENTER EAST, 203 East 21st Street Failure to Identify / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was reported as being “highly intoxicated” while walking around the exterior of the dormitory. The student was found sitting near the bicycle racks located on the west side of the dormitory. The student, who was under the age of 21, initially provided officers with a fictitious name. The student was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 1:00 a.m. JESTER CENTER EAST, 203 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was reported as being passed out by the lobby restroom. The student was found laying in the remnants of his night's consumables. Once the student was moved, it was discovered he had just as many problems keeping his intestinal contents up as he did keeping them down. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport the student to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 05/16/09 at 11:09 p.m. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A black i-home clock radio, an i-pod touch 8 GB MP3 player, a pink Cannon digital camera and a gold heart charm bracelet were stolen form an unsecured 2nd floor dormitory room. Loss value: $425.00. Occurred on 05/14/09 between 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Theft: The frame and rear wheel of a Schwinn bicycle was stolen from a bicycle rack located in the courtyard of the dormitory. The u-lock, and front wheel of the bicycle were still secured to the bicycle rack. Loss value: $125.00. Occurred between 05/10/09 at 11:00 a.m. and 05/17/09 at 2:00 p.m. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A black Trek bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a u-lock to a bicycle rack located on the southwest side of the dormitory. Loss value: $275.00. Occurred between 05/17/09 at 3:00 p.m. and 05/18/09 at 12 noon. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student was reported as being very intoxicated while trying to make it from Jester Center East and Jester Center West. The student was found inside Jester Center West and was deemed to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport the student to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 05/19/09 at 6:05 a.m. LIVING LEARNING CENTER, 2610 Whitis Theft: A UT staff member reported seeing a non-UT subject cutting a cable lock that was being used to “secure” a blue Schwinn bicycle to a bicycle rack located inside the Living Learning Center courtyard. The suspect was quickly located on the Schwinn bicycle. The bicycle in question had been registered with The University of Texas at Austin Parking and Transportation Services Office. The owner of the bicycle was identified through the registration and it was learned the subject did indeed steal the bicycle. The owner of the bicycle got his bicycle back, the reporting person is due a pizza courtesy of UTPD and the thief will not be stealing another bicycle tonight. All in all, it was a good day. Occurred on 05/18/09 at 4:07 a.m. MOFFETT MOLECULAR BIOLOGY BUILDING, 2500 Speedway Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found performing skateboard stunts off of a retaining wall located on the east side of the building. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 5:21 p.m. MONCRIEF-NEUHAUS ATHLETIC CENTER, 2015 San Jacinto Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as soliciting money from pedestrians. The subject was located and issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 05/18/09 at 7:23 a.m. NEURAL AND MOLECULAR SCIENCE BUILDING, 2506 Speedway Theft: A Dell Latitude D630 laptop computer and a wireless computer mouse were stolen from a 5th floor graduate student office suite. Loss value: $$1,070.00. Occurred between 05/15/09 at 4:30 p.m. and 05/18/09 at 10:00 a.m. PARKING LOT 27, 2600 Whitis Burglary of Motor Vehicle: The front passenger window was broken out of a parked 2004 Ford Mustang. A Panasonic AM/FM/CD stereo was stolen from the vehicle. Loss value: $150.00. Repair cost: $150.00. Occurred on 05/17/09 between 1:10 p.m. and 3:02 p.m. SUTTON HALL, 210 West 21st Street Theft: A silver and blue MacBook Pro was stolen after it was left unattended and unsecured in a student lounge. Loss value: $2,500.00. Occurred on 05/15/09 between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning (3 counts): Three non-UT subjects were reported as performing bicycle stunts on the sidewalk located on the south side of the building. All three subjects were issued written criminal trespass warnings. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 4:20 p.m. UNIVERSITY TEACHING CENTER, 105 West 21st Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was found sleeping on a hallway couch. The subject had previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning. After being taken into custody, the subject vowed he would return and UT Police would need to arrest him over an d over again. Occurred on 05/15/09 at 9:20 a.m. 500 West 33rd Street Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Driving Without a License: A UT Police Office observed a white 2001 Toyota Camry strike a brick pillar before squealing the tires and driving away. The driver of the vehicle, a non-UT subject, and the front seat passenger exited the vehicle to observe the damage to the car. The nervous driver exclaimed to the officers that the vehicle belonged to a friend and that he did not possess a driver's license. The driver was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Both the driver and the non-UT passenger were also found to be in possession of pipes with burned marijuana residue. Occurred on 05/15/09 at 2:30 a.m. 100 East Dean Keeton Public Intoxication: A UT student was found passed out on a bus stop bench. The student had difficulty staying awake and could not recall his address or how he planned to get home. The student did not understand why it was that an officer was speaking to him. The officer understood that the subject was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point the subject was a danger to himself. Occurred on 05/16/09 at 2:33 a.m. 200 East Dean Keeton Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (5 counts): A UT student was stopped for driving a green Dodge Stratus at night without the vehicle's headlamps turned on. There were five passengers inside the vehicle who were all UT students that were under the age of 21. Each of the five passengers was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 12:37 A.M. 600 Rio Grande Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject, who is a known thief, began to act suspiciously after observing a marked patrol vehicle. The subject changed his direction of travel several times as the officer observed him. After losing sight of the subject for a brief period of time, the officer located the subject again – this time the subject was in possession of a bag that he had not previously been carrying. The subject was stopped and found to have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for camping in a public place and the possession of drug paraphernalia. The subject was also found to be in possession of a glass tube with burn marks and containing cocaine residue. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 3:49 a.m. 1800 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated / Open Container of Alcohol in a Vehicle: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving a silver 1999 Toyota Camry the wrong way on a one-way roadway. When the driver was asked where he had been, the subject replied, “Where did I not go?” An open can of beer was observed in the back center console of the vehicle. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 05/17/09 at 5:22 a.m. 2300 San Jacinto Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was stopped after running a stop sign while driving a white cab. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for speeding. Occurred on 05/16/09 at 3:50 p.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 77 alarm calls, 3 “Police Help” Call Box activations, 2 fire alarm activations, 1 unsecured door report, 2 suspicious odor reports, 4 suspicious people reports, 2 found property reports, 2 welfare concern reports, 1 medical emergency assist, 1 stuck elevator call, 1 malfunctioning light report, 2 motor vehicle collision reports and 8 public assist requests between 05/15/09 and 05/19/09. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
