Report for 06/11/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 06/10/09 and Thursday, 06/11/09. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 East Dean Keeton Theft: A wallet containing $100.00 in cash, several credit cards, checkbook and PIN number, Social Security card, and other forms of personal identification was stolen from an unsecured 7th floor office. During the investigation, the officer learned that the victim had placed her wallet in plain view and had left her office unattended for approximately 15 minutes. Loss value: $110.00. Occurred on: 6-09-09, between 1:45 PM and 2:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Desire, Ability, and Opportunity; these are the three things that a thief needs in order to be a successful thief. Simply removing one element from this equation will force a thief to get a real job. The simplest element to remove is Opportunity. Locking an office or dormitory door keeps the thief outside looking in. Carrying only what you need for the day keeps the thief desiring more and looking for other opportunities to apply his or her trade. WINSHIP DRAMA BUILDING, 300 East 23rd Street Theft: A Rigid pneumatic staple gun was reported stolen from a work station located near the loading dock. During the investigation, the officer learned the staple gun had been left unattended and unsecured. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 6-07-09 and 6-09-09. 300 BLOCK 21st STREET Public Intoxication / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of more than One Valid Driver's License: A UT police officer observed a future UT student sitting on a planter box slumped over. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's person and on her breath. The officer noted that the future student was very proficient with her mush-mouth dialect. The officer learned that the subject was attending Freshman Orientation and had attended a fraternity party. When asked for her identification, the subject handed the officer a credit card and explained that she was over the age of 21. The officer saw that the subject was in possession of several State issued Driver's Licenses. As the investigation continued, the officer took the subject into custody for Public Intoxication / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor / Possession of more than One Valid Driver's License and transported her to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-11-09, at 2:25 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: For many college students across the great State of Texas going to a fraternity party is a presumed rite of passage. Many times this rite of passage leads to law enforcement actions being taken. There are several things facing this future UT student, court costs, community service, alcohol education class, meeting with the Dean of Student's Office, and last but not least a criminal record. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 23 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 1 suspicious person report and 4 unsecured door reports between 06/10/09 and 06/11/09. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or via e-mail to Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu .
