Report for 06/15/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 06/12/09 and Monday, 06/15/09. AT&T EXECUTIVE EDUCATION & CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Assault by Contact: An argument involving two non-UT subjects ensued over a parking space. One of the two subjects stood in the space while the other attempted to park his vehicle in the same space. The driving subject gave up on any aspirations to occupy the space with his vehicle and parked in another parking space. While the driver of the vehicle and his wife walked by the aforementioned parking space. The subject who had been standing in the space confronted the driver and told him, “The next time you want to start something, be a man about it” and then shoved the driver with his hands. The driver and his wife continued to walk toward the garage elevator. The shoving did not cause any pain or injury, but was offensive in nature. Occurred on 06/12/09 at 4:52 p.m. PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, 510 East 23rd Street Burglary of a Building: The lock latch to a storage trunk was broken while the trunk was left inside a secured 3rd floor office. A Pacific Laser Systems laser level, 2 Surefire flashlights, 2 Petzl headlamps and various tools were stolen from the trunk. A Minolta single lens reflex camera was also stolen from the 3rd floor office. Evidence at the scene suggested the thief entered the office through the ceiling. Loss value: $1,000.00. Occurred on 06/13/09 between 3:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: There are several crime prevention considerations regarding this caper. First, like my grandfather once told me, “A lock only keeps the honest man out.” As you see here, the door lock did its job. The thief needed to find an alternate way into this room to commit the theft. The locking system on the trunk is only as good as its weakest point. In this case, the latch was that weak point. Placing valuables inside a secured box or trunk is always a good idea, but consider how you would break into a trunk if you needed to. Find the weak point and address that issue. In this case, the addition of support boards on the inside of the trunk where the latch attached to the trunk would have made the latch more secure. Another alternative would have been the installation of supplemental hasps and locks on the trunk. Additional locking mechanisms would have forced the thief to spend more time getting into the trunk. As always, never leave any valuables unsecured, even inside a “secured” office. Another consideration involves the marking of your property as yours. The UT Police Department will loan you an electric engraver free of charge. Use this engraver to mark your valuables with your state issued ID card number or driver's license number. Property marked with the owner's identification number makes it easier for cops to identify lost / stolen property and makes it harder for a thief to sell stolen property. Stop by the UT Police Department today to check out an engraver. WOOLDRIDGE HALL, 600 West 24th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed trying to enter the building while the building was closed and unlocked. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 06/14/09 at 12:42 a.m. 2000 San Jacinto Possession of Marijuana: A non-UT subject was stopped for speeding while driving a black 2008 Chevrolet pick-up truck. The subject was found to be in possession of a metal pipe containing burned marijuana residue and 0.475 ounces of marijuana. Occurred on 06/13/09 at 3:10 a.m. 2200 San Jacinto Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was stopped for disregarding a stop sign while operating a bicycle. The subject was found to have 5 outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for driving the wrong way on a one-way roadway, running a red light, the possession of drug paraphernalia and two for public intoxication charges. Occurred on 06/15/09 at 2:19 a.m. 200 West 21st Street Evading Arrest or Detention (3 counts) / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (2 counts): Three non-UT subjects, two of which were under the age of 21, were found inside the Littlefield Fountain. After seeing an approaching officer, the three subjects exited the fountain and began to flee the area. When the subjects were finally stopped, two of them were found to have consumed alcoholic beverages. Occurred on 06/13/09 at 3:36 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 38 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 2 “Police Help” callbox activations, 3 suspicious person reports, 1 motor vehicle collision, 2 suspicious activity reports, 1 water leak report, 2 public assist requests, 1 disturbance report, 12 light malfunction reports and 13 unsecured door reports between 06/12/09 and 06/15/09.
