Report for 06/17/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 06/16/09 and Wednesday, 06/17/09. BATTS HALL, #3 South Mall Theft: Two books were stolen from an unsecured 2nd floor lounge. The books had been mailed to a faculty member and a graduate student and were being stored in the lounge as both recipients are currently out of the country. Loss value: $110.00. Occurred on 06/16/09 between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. CLARK FIELD, 1900 San Jacinto Assault: While walking around the Clark Field track, a UT Staff member was approached by a male subject and a female subject who were walking around the track in the opposite direction. The staff member stopped walking to allow the male and female subject to pass her. As the male walked by the staff member, he struck the staff member with his right forearm in a “body check” manner. The staff member felt pain as a result of the contact. The male and female subjects both continued to walk around the track. The female subject then left the area. The male subject continued to walk around the track. While approaching the staff member again, the male subject began to walk directly toward the staff member and again struck her in the same “body check” manner. Both the staff member and the male subject exchanged words about the appropriate direction of travel on the track before the male subject left the area. The male subject was described as a white male in his 50's, blonde hair, blue eyes, 6' tall, approximately 180 pounds, last seen wearing a purple t-shirt and grey sweat shorts. The female subject was described as a white female in her 50's, red hair pulled back in a ponytail, 5' tall, approximately 100 pounds last seen wearing a white t-shirt and grey shorts. Occurred on 06/16/09 at 9:05 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Sadly, I am not sure of the appropriate direction of travel for this or any track, so I can't provide any tips on that issue. I can offer a few tips regarding other aspects of this caper. First and foremost people, we need to remain calm and treat others the way you would want to be treated. A little patience and concern for others will go a long way in preventing you from assaulting another. If you find yourself in a position where you are assaulted, leave the area and call the police immediately. You should always keep your cell phone on you for quick access to the police department. If you don't have your cell phone, look around for a “Police Help” call box. It just so happens there are multiple call boxes around this track. Make use of them whenever you need police assistance. JACKSON GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES BUILDING, #10 East Mall Theft: A grey and purple ProTeam backpack style vacuum cleaner was stolen from a 2nd floor custodial services storage closet. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred between 06/11/09 at 11:00 p.m. and 06/12/09 at 12:45 A.M. 2600 Speedway Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT student was stopped for speeding while driving a Buick sedan. A front seat passenger of the vehicle, who was a UT student that was under the age of 21 was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages but not to the point she was deemed to be a danger to herself or others. Occurred on 06/17/09 at 1:11 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 13 alarm calls, 3 “Police Help” callbox activations, 2 fire alarm activations, 1 suspicious package report, 1 light malfunction report, 2 public assist requests and 5 unsecured door reports between 06/16/09 and 06/17/09. If you are a faculty or staff member that has been affected by a crime, the UT Employee Assistance Program (471-3366) is available for counseling and referrals to other appropriate services. http://www.utexas.edu/hr/eap/ To view a map of the campus visit: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/maps/index.html RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer.
