Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 06/18/09 and Tuesday, 06/23/06. CLAUDIA TAYLOR HALL, 210 West 6th Street Possession of Marijuana / Public Intoxication: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject passed out on the stairs located on the south side of the building. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The subject had a difficult time sitting up and had a harder time communicating with the officers through his mush mouthed dialect. Austin EMS treated the subject at the scene, but the subject refused to go to the hospital. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. During a search of the subject, the officers located a plastic baggie that contained a green leafy material that the officers recognized to be suspected marijuana. The subject did not remember he had been carrying a bag of marijuana around with him. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-21-09, at 1:14 AM. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Burglary of Motor Vehicle / Possession of a Controlled Substance / Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member witnessed a non-UT subject standing next to a Jeep Wrangler. The staff member then heard the vehicle's car alarm activating and saw a subject leaning into the vehicle. As the officers were arriving, the subject decided it was time to leave. When stopped, the subject was carrying a black backpack. The subject informed the officers that he had seen a Hispanic male leaving the area. The staff member was able to positively identify the non-UT subject as the same subject he had seen entering the Jeep Wrangler. During a search of the subject, incidental to his arrest, the officers located a small plastic baggie that contained a “rock” of crack cocaine. The backpack contained an assortment of tools, an IPod charger, three cell phone chargers, and a Delphi XM2GO radio with charger. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 6-21-09, at 11:52 PM. GREOGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A UT student secured his personal belongings inside a locker located inside a second floor locker room. Upon his return, the student discovered his combination pad-lock and $70.00 in cash had been taken. Loss value: $72.00. Occurred on: 6-22-09, between 10:00 PM and 11:35 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many of the combination locks used today are easily defeated with a simple technique called “rapping.” When securing your personal property in areas with public access, consider switching from a combination pad-lock to a key pad-lock. Because of the design differences “rapping” will not work as effectively on a keyed pad-lock. The thief will have to cut the lock off in order to steal your property. GREOGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A UT staff member placed his wallet and other personal property inside a day use locker located inside a second floor men's locker room. The locker was secured with a combination pad-lock. Upon the staff member's return, his discovered that his lock along with $150.00 in cash were missing from the day use locker. Loss value: $152.00. Occurred on: 6-22-09, between 8:37 PM and 10:30 PM. GREOGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A brown leather wallet containing several credit cards, $10.00 in cash, and personal identification were stolen from an unsecure locker located inside a second floors men's locker room. During the investigation, the officer learned that the subject had left his property unattended for 5 minutes while he showered. Loss value: $25.00. Occurred on6-20-09, between 8:45 PM and 8:50 PM. JACKSON SCHOOL OF GEOLOGY, #10 East Mall Criminal Mischief: A UT faculty member discovered the glass insert in his third floor office had been broken out and several desk drawers were open. During the investigation, the officer learned two additional offices had also been entered in the same manner. No property was reported missing. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 6-19-09 and 6-22-09. JACKSON SCHOOL OF GEOLOGY, #10 East Mall Suspicious Person: A UT staff member observed a UT student attempting to gain entry into the building through a locked door located on the east side of the building. During the investigation, the officers searched the area and located the student a short distance away. The student informed the officers that he was looking for a bathroom. Occurred on: 6-21-09, at 1:09 PM. KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Ave. Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping on the west side of the building. During the investigation, the subject informed the officer that he was waiting for the church to open so that he could get a bus pass and an HEB card. The officer explained the boundaries of the university and issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 6-23-09, at 1:50 AM. O. HENRY HALL, 601 Colorado Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT police officer observed a non-UT subject stumble up the stairs located on the south side of the building. As the officer approached the subject, the officer discovered evidence that the subject had preformed a bodily function and was finishing pulling up his zipper. The subject informed the officer that he lived close by, but could not wait any longer. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the property. Occurred on: 6-21-09, at 2:08 AM. PETER T FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, #2 West Mall Disorderly Conduct Threatens Another: A UT staff member observed an irate and disruptive UT student. During the investigation, the officer learned the student had become upset when the printers had been turned off prior to the closing of the academic center. The student informed the officer that he had not slept in the last 48 hours and wanted to simply print his mid-term. As the investigation continued, the officer soon learned from several witnesses, the student had become very upset with the staff working in the computer lab and had used language that would have embarrassed a sailor's mother, while aggressively flexing and posturing. After making several threats towards the staff member, the student left the area. The student was issued a field release citation for Disorderly Conduct and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 6-22-09, at 11:58 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Street Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT staff member discovered his IPod, charger, headphones, and a Canon Powershot camera had been stolen from inside his Honda. During the investigation, the officer noticed there were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle. The owner was unsure if he had secured his vehicle. Loss value: $340.00. Occurred on: 6-22-09, between 1:30 PM and 5:15 PM. TOWNES HALL, 727 Dean Keeton Dr. Theft: A UT student reported he had left his black Blackberry Curve unattended inside the atrium of the Law School. During the investigation, the victim had informed the officer that he had been able to track his cell phone to an off campus location with the use of his wife's cellular telephone. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred on: 6-21-09, between 3:30 PM and 7:30 PM. 2500 BLOCK ROBERT DEDMAN Reckless Damage: A UT staff member observed the driver of a green 18-wheele vehicle strike a green electrical box as the vehicle was turning east onto Dean Keeton from Robert Dedman. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to assess the damage. Loss value: $75.00. Occurred on: 6-22-09, at 5:35 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 8 alarm calls, 2 “Police Help” callbox activations, 2 suspicious activity reports, and 9 unsecured door reports between 06/22/09 and 06/23/09.
