Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 07-08-09 and Thursday, 07-09-09 CRIME PREVENTION TIP OF THE DAY: July is National Auto Theft Prevention Month. Yesterday the University of Texas Police Department and the City of Austin Police Department partnered up to help reduce the vulnerability of your vehicle. Several subscribers to the Campus Watch emailed me and stated they were unable to take advantage of this service due to the short notice. Officer Pieper was able to obtain APD's schedule for future VIN Etching events, this schedule is attached to the Campus Watch. Come out and take full advantage of this FREE Service. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2110 Speedway Burglary: A grey Dell laptop computer was reported stolen from a secured 5th floor office. Loss value: $800.00. Occurred between 7-07-09, at 12:30 PM and 7-08-09, at 10:00 AM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member discovered the south exit control arm had been damaged and made inoperable. During the investigation, the staff member informed the officer a black Nissan Altima had approached the garage. An unknown subject was seen exiting the vehicle and walking up to the control arm, then lifted it to allow the Nissan to enter. The vehicle was located inside the garage. As the investigation continued, the officers were unable to locate the owner of the vehicle. The unknown subject was described as: White male, shaggy brown hair, and was last seen wearing a dark grey shirt, tan shorts and tennis shoes. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 7-09-09 at 2;25 AM. UNIVERSITY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 2200 East 6th Street Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT staff member discovered an unknown subject had entered his vehicle and had placed several personal items on the driver's seat. The staff member observed two subjects walking towards his vehicle, then toss something into the bushes as they began running away. The staff member recovered four CDs that had been in his vehicle. During the investigation, the staff member discovered 8 packs of cigarettes, a Sony face plate, and a pair of prescription glasses had also been stolen from his vehicle. As the investigation continued, the officers obtained a description of the two subjects and began a search of the area. Officers located both subjects two blocks away. The staff member was able to positively identify both subjects as the ones who had thrown his CDs into the bushes. Both subjects were detained and transported to the Gardner-Betts juvenile facility. Loss value: $230.00. Occurred on: 7-08-09, at 5:30 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was observed driving a blue Nissan through campus at a high rate of speed. During the traffic investigation, the officer learned that the subject had an outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant…nope, not for speeding, Expired Registration. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding warrant and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 7-09-09, at 2:01 AM. 2500 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Theft: A Trek mountain bicycle with Postal Service graphics was stolen from the bike racks located on the southwest side of RLM after being secured with a “thin” cable lock. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred on: 7-07-09, between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 20 alarm calls, 2 fire alarms, 3 “Police Help” call box activations, 1 public assist request, 1 found property report and 3 unsecured door reports between 07/08/09 and 07/09/09.
