Report for 07/15/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 07/14/09 and Wednesday, 07/15/09. CLAUDIA T. JOHNSON HALL, 210 West 6th Street Theft / Criminal Trespass Warning (3 counts): Three non-UT subjects were observed by a UT Guard Officer loitering by a sub floor access point to the building. One of the subjects removed a portable metal sign that had been stored by the access point before the three subjects began to walk away. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, all three subjects were issued a written criminal trespass warning citation. Recovered value: $50.00. Occurred on 07/15/09 at 3:15 a.m. F.L. WINSHIP DRAMA BUILDING, 300 East 23rd Street Theft: Two books were stolen from an unsecured drawer located in an unsecured 2nd floor classroom. Loss value: $27.00. Occurred between 07/02/09 at 1:00 p.m. and 07/06/09 at 1:00 p.m. HOGG MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM, 2300 Whitis Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was found sleeping at the bottom of an exterior stairwell. The subject had previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning and stated he knew he was not supposed to be on campus. The subject was then escorted from the campus to a local facility designed to provide over-night lodging pending a date with the judge. Occurred on 07/15/09 at 12:05 a.m. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found inside a 3rd floor room when the building was closed to the public. The subject stated he had followed someone through an exterior door to gain access to the building. The subject stated he was there studying for his up-coming bar exam. Perhaps he should have started studying the penal code chapter involving criminal trespass as he was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 07/15/09 at 1:46 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: A door lock is only as good as the people who utilize the door. All too often, people who do not have authorization to be in a building gain access to the building by following or tailgating someone who opened a locked door. Everyone must do their part to prevent this from happening. When you open a locked door to enter a building, hallway or room, make sure it closes and locks behind you. If the door does not close or lock behind you any thief (or worse) could enter the building. If someone is following you through a secure door and you do not know who they are, ask them if you can help them or ask them to use their key. If you do not feel comfortable confronting someone you do not know who follows you through a secured door, then place a telephone call to the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441 once the person walks away and report the person as suspicious. 2300 San Jacinto Criminal Trespass Warning / Failure to Identify: A non-UT subject was stopped after being observed walking her dog without a leash. The subject admitted she had previously been warned by a UT Police Officer that having dog off of a leash was a violation. The subject initially refused to provide any identifying information and then provided a fictitious name, date of birth and address. After realizing she could be arrested for providing an officer with a fictitious name, date of birth or address she quickly recanted and provided her correct identifying information. The subject was released after she was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 07/15/09 at approximately 6:00 a.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Lying is never a good idea; but more importantly, heed the warnings given to you by a police officer. If an officer tells you something you are doing is a violation take that warning to heart and refrain from engaging in that behavior again. By simply walking her dog on a leash as she had been advised to do so before, the subject in this case would have avoided the entire encounter. 300 West 27th Street Public Intoxication: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was reported as being passed out under a bus stop bench. Before the officer arrived, the student had come to and made his way to a dumpster across the street. The student showed classic signs of intoxication as the front of his pants had a spot on them that was indicative of alcohol's depressant effects on the bladder. The student also had evidence of his night's consumables on the front of his shirt. The student was unaware of his surroundings and stated he was going to sleep under the aforementioned dumpster. The student was deemed to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself. In lieu of being taken into custody, a local friend of the student was summoned to the scene and took care, custody and control of the student. Occurred on 07/15/09 at 1:22 a.m. Safety Tip: Police officers who come into contact with an intoxicated subject does not need to make an arrest. The officer is not allowed to let the intoxicated person go once that person has demonstrated that he or she is a danger to anyone (including themselves). The officer can decide to send the intoxicated person to the hospital (if warranted) or the officer can release the intoxicated person to a sober, responsible adult. With that in mind, why not take a sober friend with you when you go out? In addition to possibly keeping you form going to jail, a sober friend can also serve to keep you from being stopped by the police in the first place.
