Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 07/23/09 and Friday, 07/24/09. ****Austin Police Department Citizen Alert**** The Austin Police Department has sent out the following Citizen Alert with a request for anyone having any information pertaining to the recent homicides of two people in the neighborhood just west of campus: APD-Austin Police Department\ Homicide Investigation FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Public Information Office, 974-5017 Homicide Investigation Case: 09-2021532 Date: Tuesday, July 21, 2009 Time: 5:15 p.m. Location: 904 West 21st Street Deceased: John Goosey and Stacy Barnett Narrative: On Tuesday, July 21, 2009, APD responded to a deceased person call at 904 West 21st Street. Austin-Travis County EMS responded to the scene and pronounced a male and a female deceased. A preliminary investigation shows that both victims died as a result of trauma to their bodies. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Homicide Unit Detectives at 512-477-3588. This case remains under investigation by APD Homicide detectives. ****Administrative Message**** The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the university is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please fill complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. If you require any additional information regarding this service, please contact Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. ****Administrative Message No.2**** In light of the call at the Engineering Teaching Center that was highlighted in yesterday's Campus Watch and with the onset of a new school year, we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the resources available to all faculty, staff and student members on the UT Police webpage. The UT Police Department is proud to offer a variety of videos on our webpage. Log onto http://www.utexas.edu/police/ and scroll to the bottom of the page where you will see a link to “safety videos.†Click on the link to select one of several videos. We have videos regarding what actions should be taken in the event of an active shooter on a campus or a video of what to do in the event of an active shooter in the workplace (When Lightning Strikes). We also have videos for dealing with school and workplace violence (Flashpoint). You will need to logon using your UT EID and password to view any of the videos. JESTER CENTER ACADEMIC, 201 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as asking pedestrians along 21st Street for money. The subject was observed near Jester Center. A subject matching the description given was located inside Jester Center. That subject was belligerent and evasive in his answers pertaining to the reason for his campus visit. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning citation. Occurred on 07/23/09 at 6:20 p.m. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject, who was just issued a written criminal trespass warning for the Union Building the previous day, was observed testing the veracity of the day-old warning by entering the building. The officer located the subject and proved that the warning had merit by taking her into custody. Occurred on 07/23/09 at 2:30 p.m. UNIVERSITY INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE BUILDING, 1701 Manor Road Graffiti: A silver gel pen was used to write letters on a gutter downspout located on the northeast side of the building. Removal cost: $30.00. Discovered on 07/23/09 at 9:45 a.m. 1900 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated: A UT student was stopped for driving the wrong way on a one-way roadway in a silver 2007 Lexus. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 alarm calls, 1 “Police Help†call box alarm, 3 fire alarm activations, 1 welfare concern, 2 public assist requests, 2 malfunctioning light reports, and 2 unsecured door reports between 07/23/09 and 07/24/09. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
