Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 07/24/09 and Monday, 07/27/09. ****Administrative Message**** The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the university is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please fill complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. ALMETRIS DUREN RESIDENCE HALL, 2626 Whitis False Report / Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject who was under the age of 21, activated a “Police Help” emergency call box. The subject admitted to pushing the call box button when he was in no need of police assistance. The subject said he “hits them [call box buttons] all the time at his TCU campus. The subject was in Austin to attend an “Island Party” at a local fraternity house where he consumed alcoholic beverages to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself. Occurred on 07/25/09 at 6:17 p.m. AT&T EXECUTIVE EDUCATION & CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Assist Outside Agency / Criminal Trespass Warning: A staff member utilized a “Police Help” emergency call box to report being the victim of a domestic assault the previous evening. The staff member was concerned her husband may show up at her work place as he worked in a different part of the conference center. The husband was located at the conference center. The Austin Police Department responded to take a report for the off-campus assault. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the husband was issued a written criminal trespass warning as a notice he was not to enter the area of the conference center where his wife worked. Occurred on 07/26/09 at 8:30 a.m. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Assault with Injury: Two non-UT subjects, who were both juveniles staying in the dormitory for a summer camp for gifted students, engaged in an argument over the ownership of a Pokemon trading card. The argument escalated until one of the youths grabbed the other youth. The assaultive youth was removed from the program and sent home. Occurred on 07/19/09 at approximately 1:30 p.m. Reported on 07/24/09 at 2:32 p.m. LADY BIRD JOHNSON WILDFLOWER CENTER, 4801 LaCrosse Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A Dell laptop computer was stolen when it was left on the backseat of a parked blue Mercury 4-door. At the time of the theft, the vehicle's doors were unlocked and the windows were rolled down. Loss value: $1,200.00. Occurred on 07/26/09 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: I know it seems obvious, but allow me to be just that – most home burglaries, office thefts, auto thefts and burglaries occur when the doors and or windows to those locations are left open or unlocked. Protect yourself and your property. Keep the doors and windows to your home, office and car closed and locked. PARKING LOT 104, 2100 IH-35 Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed assisting a second non-UT subject while they walked. The second subject was having a very difficult time remaining upright and keeping her eyes open as she walked. When an officer approached the subjects, the first subject exclaimed, “No we are not.” The officer inquired as to what the first subject meant to which the first subject stated that they were not okay. The first subject went on to say the two were downtown celebrating the second subject's birthday when he realized his friend had consumed too much alcohol. The first subject stated he was having a difficult time getting his friend home. The friend was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was a danger to herself. In lieu of arresting the subject, the officer turned care, custody and control of the first subject and assisted them in procuring a cab. Occurred on 07/26/09 at 3:25 a.m. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A student never received a letter containing $60 in cash that was sent to him by a relative. Loss value: $60.00. Reported on 07/24/09 at 3:54 p.m. WHITAKER FIELDS, 4901 Guadalupe Graffiti: Black spray paint was used to write an illegible word on a street sign located on the north side of the property. Removal cost: $25.00. Discovered on 07/27/09 at 2:25 a.m. 1900 San Jacinto Consumption of Alcohol By A Minor (3 counts)/ Possession of More Than One Valid Driver's License: Three UT students, who were under the age of 21 and passengers inside a vehicle that was stopped for driving the wrong way on a one-way roadway, were found to have consumed alcoholic beverages. One of the three students was found to be in possession of a valid driver's license that belonged to someone unknown to the student. The person that driver's license had been issued to happened to be over 21 years old. Occurred on 07/25/09 at 2:40 a.m. 300 West 27th Street Public Intoxication / Obstruction of Motor Vehicle Operator's View / Reckless Driving: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was observed clinging to the rear trunk of a moving silver 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. The vehicle was being driven by a UT student. Both students were going home after an “Island Party” at a local fraternity house. In lieu of taking the trunk ornament to jail, the officer issued the student a citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on 07/25/09 at 5:10 p.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 alarm calls, 1 “Police Help” call box alarm, 4 fire alarm activations, 2 welfare concern reports, 8 public assist requests, 1 motor vehicle collision, 1 lost - then found property, 1 suspicious activity report and 16 unsecured door reports between 07/24/09 and 07/27/09. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
