Report for 07/28/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 07/27/09 and Tuesday, 07/28/09. ****Administrative Message**** The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the university is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please fill complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. Your cell phone number will not be used for any other purpose. If you require any additional information regarding this service, please contact Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2110 Speedway Theft: A white Mac Book Pro laptop computer and a Dell Latitude laptop computer were from a 5th floor room. Loss value: $1,800.00. Occurred between 07/10/09 at 9:15 a.m. and 07/27/09 at 1:56 p.m. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 East Dean Keeton Theft: A blue Trek SU200 bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to the bicycle rack located on north side of the building. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred on 07/27/09 between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Allow me to take this opportunity to highlight the time frame of this theft: 2 pm to 5 pm; a three-hour window in the middle of the afternoon; a time when the campus is bustling with faculty, staff, students and visitors. Many think that crime is a nighttime issue - that criminals only come out under the cover of darkness. This case really shows crime can happen at any time of the day or night. That being said, let's all do our part to help protect the 40 Acres. When you are out and about on campus, take a little time to look around. If you see something that seems suspicious to you then it probably is suspicious. Do not rationalize or disregard your suspicion; call UTPD right away at 512-471-4441. We will promptly respond to your call and determine if a violation of the law has occurred. If your report does lead to the apprehension of a thief, UTPD will buy you the pizza of your choice and deliver it to you when and where you want it – just our little way of saying “Thanks!” PARKING LOT 38, 2200 Red River Criminal Mischief: An unknown object was used to scratch the paint on the right side of a parked 2009 Nissan Sentra. Repair cost: $500.00. Occurred on 07/27/09 between 9:00 a.m. and 8:40 p.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 1 welfare concern report, 2 public assist requests, 1 suspicious activity report, 2 light malfunction reports and 11 unsecured door reports between 07/27/09 and 07/28/09.
