Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 08/14/09 and Wednesday, 08/19/09. AT&T EXECUTIVE EDUCATION AND CONFERENCEING CENTER, 1900 University Ave. Assault with Bodily Injury: A non-UT patron entered his hotel room to discover two scantily clad non-UT subjects already there and an unidentified third subject standing by the door. The patron began yelling at all three subjects to leave his room. One of the three suspects struck the victim in the face as all three were leaving the room. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had arrived at the hotel with two of the suspects, and all three had gone to a local establishment located on 6th Street. The victim and the suspects had gone their separate ways once they got to the entertainment district. The victim declined to file charges. Occurred on: 8-16-09, at 2:25 AM. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Blvd. Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member reported opening a third floor office and discovering a 3” plastic card had been wedged between the door frame and the lock. When the door opened the card fell to the floor. During the investigation, the officer learned the staff member had also discovered a shoe print on the same door earlier in the day. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 8-17-09, at 4:19 PM. CENTRAL RECEIVING BUILDING, 2200 Comal Street Theft: A non-UT subject discovered a tool trailer had been forced opened and three Titan compressors, two Dewalt saws, one grinder and a halogen light had been stolen. Loss value: $1,060. Occurred between: 8-14-09 and 8-17-09. JACKSON SCHOOL OF GEOLOGY, #10 East Mall Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member observed a non-UT subject wandering the 5th floor hall. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and soon learned the subject was not employed or enrolled with the University of Texas. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was asked to leave the area. The subject refused to comply with the officer's request to the leave the building. After several refusals the subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 8-16-09, at 2:08 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Burglary of Habitation: Two non-UT subjects were observed attempting to pull on the exterior doors of the dormitory. During the investigation, the officers located the subjects in the 2100 Block of Guadalupe. The officers soon learned the subjects had been attempting to sell a laptop computer to several customers inside one of the local businesses. As the investigation continued, one officer discovered the laptop computer was registered to a current UT student. The officer contacted the student about his property. It was at that time the student realized his property had been stolen from inside his dormitory room. Both subjects were taken into custody for Burglary of Habitation and were transported to Central Booking. Loss value: $500.00 Recovered. Occurred on: 8-15-09, at 2:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Had this student not taken the time to engrave his property, the officers would not have been able to contact him. Had the student not taken the time to engrave his property, these two suspects might have walked …walked away with someone else's property. Engravers can be checked out at the UT Police Department or in one of the dormitories on campus. LITTLEFIELD HOME, 302 West 24th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered in a restricted area after he had established a campsite. The officer issued the subject a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted him from the area. Occurred on: 8-16-09, at 6:36 PM. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject approached a UT student and asked for access to the Tower Observation area. The subject left the area when he was told he could not gain access. Officers searched the area and located the subject. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 8-18-09, at 1:10 PM. MANOR PARKING GARAGE, 2017 Robert Dedman Dr. Duty Upon Striking a Fixture or Highway Landscape: UT police officers responded to an alarm inside the garage. Upon their arrival, the officers discovered a vehicle had struck the alarm. The officers searched the area and located the vehicle within the garage. Damage value: $400.00. Occurred on: 8-18-09, at 7:42 PM. 600 BLOCK EAST MARTIN LUTHER KING BLVD Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of a Controlled Substance: A UT police officer observed a red Jeep committing several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol the non-UT driver's breath. The officer also noticed the subject's eyes were blood shot and watery. The driver informed the officer that he had consumed a total of four beers at around 10 PM. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests, and the driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. During a search of the subject, the officer located a small clear plastic baggie that contained a white powder. A test of the powder revealed to the officer that the subject was in possession of a Controlled Substance, Cocaine. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 8-16-09, at 3:18 AM. 2500 BLOCK WHITIS AVE Theft: A UT staff member discovered a 2” trailer hitch ball had been removed from his vehicle. Loss value: $20.00. Occurred on: 8-14-09, between 2:00 PM and 2:25 PM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: For the parents of this year's incoming freshman class, the countdown for the fall 2009 semester has started. There are 1 day left before the first day of Moove-In. There are several things that you can start doing to get your student ready. - All property is engraved with a State issued DL or ID number - Bicycle is registered with Parking and Transportation and a two lock locking system is being used to secure the bike to a bike rack. - Have you registered for the Women's Self Defense class? - Has your child developed a safety plan? - Have you pre-programmed the UTPD telephone number into your cellular telephone? If not the number is 512-471-4441. - Double check to ensure you are signed up for the emergency text messaging system.
