Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 08/21/09 and Monday, 08/24/09. SURE Walk During this year's Freshman Orientation, many parents had questions pertaining to SURE Walk. The UT Student Government is proud to announce SURE Walk is back. "Don't want to walk home alone? Call SURE Walk at 512-232-WALK (9255) and volunteers will meet you anywhere on campus and escort you to your destination. SURE Walk is available from 9PM to 1AM, Monday through Thursday, and is located in the FAC Atrium." AT&T EXECUTIVE EDUCATION & CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Theft: A tan colored bicycle, make and model are unknown, was stolen when it was left unsecured at a bicycle rack located by the main entrance to the parking garage. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on 08/22/09 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. COLORADO APARTMENTS, 2500 Lake Austin Criminal Mischief: An unknown person(s) relocated several rolls of toilet paper to the tree limbs located around the property. Removal cost: $50.00. Discovered on 08/24/09 at 2:13 a.m. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red river Assault by Contact / Criminal Trespass: An unidentified female subject distracted a staff member who was working at an entry point to the circus' animal habitat so a second female subject could sneak into the area. The second female subject approached the elephant tents and began to take pictures. The second female subject refused to leave when directed to do so by a circus employee. The employee then grabbed the female subject's arm to escort her from the restricted area. At that point, the first female subject entered the area and grabbed the employee. Both female subjects then left the area in a black vehicle. One of the female subject's was described as a Hispanic female in her 40's with short black hair, 5'6” tall, approximately 160 pounds, wearing a green dress and sunglasses and was last seen with a silver camera. The second female subject was described as a white female in her 40's with short blonde hair, approximately 5'9” tall, 160 pounds and last seen wearing a white sleeveless t-shirt and khaki shorts. Occurred on 08/23/09 at 1:50 p.m. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red river Theft: A black laptop cover, a Gateway laptop computer and a backpack containing a pocket knife, a pair of sunglasses, a pair of reading glasses and a cell phone charger were stolen from a curtained off area located on the arena concourse of the events center. Loss value: $1,560.00. Occurred on 08/23/09 between 11:00 a.m. and 12 noon. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red river Theft: A Sony camcorder was stolen when it was left in the arena level aisle after a circus performance had ended. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on 08/23/09 between 5:50 p.m. and 6:05 p.m. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Criminal Trespass: Two non-UT subjects entered the gymnasium and inquired from the gymnasium staff how they could enter to play basketball without a gym membership. The two subjects were directed to the day pass vending machine to purchase a day pass for $10. The two subjects stood in front of the machine for approximately four minutes. Gregory Gym Staff did not see the subject put any money into the machine. The subjects then complained they paid for the pass but the machine did not release a day pass. The two subjects failed to go to the gym store to clear up the issue. Instead, they entered the 2nd floor basketball courts and began to play basketball. Gregory Gym Staff members then told the subjects they would need to leave the gymnasium. Both subjects refused to leave. Once police officers arrived, the subjects' decision to leave was no longer theirs to make. Occurred on 08/23/09 at 4:56 p.m. JACKSON GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES BUILDING, #10 East Mall Burglary of Building: A glass window door insert was broken out of a door to a 3rd floor office. The desk drawers inside the office were found opened and their contents disturbed. No items were reported stolen from the office. Repair cost: $50.00. Discovered on 08/22/09 at 12:30 p.m. LIVING LEARNING HALL E, 2610 Whitis Theft: The front wheel to a black Schwinn Clear Creek bicycle was stolen while the bicycle was secured to a bicycle rack located on the east side of the building. Loss value: $30.00. Occurred between 08/18/09 at 11:30 p.m. and 08/19/09 at 12:30 p.m. O HENRY HALL, 601 Colorado Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found sleeping on the steps by the south entry to the building. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 08/22/09 at 7:04 p.m. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A black Northface Recon backpack containing a MacBook Pro laptop computer, a black leather Bible, a pair of Shure headphones, a bottle of sunscreen and a school folder was stolen when it was left on a table while the owner reserved a bowling lane. Loss value: $1,730.00. Occurred on 08/23/09 between 6:55 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. 2300 San Jacinto Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor / Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor (3 counts): A non-UT subject, who was under the age of 21, was stopped for speeding and disregarding a stop sign while driving a red Ford pick-up truck. The subject was found to have consumed alcoholic beverages, but was not intoxicated to the point she was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. Three passengers in the vehicle, who were all under the age of 21, were also found to have consumed alcoholic beverages. Occurred on 08/22/09 at 2:00 a.m. 2400 San Jacinto Public Intoxication: A UT student was observed staggering as he walked along the sidewalk. The student then staggered up a hill and back down the hill. While maneuvering down the hill, the student lost his footing several times. Once back down the hill, the student needed to use a wall for support as he tried to walk. When asked for his identification, the student produced a bicycle light form his bag, turned it on and began to hand it to the officer before he lost control of it and dropped it. At one point, the student held his hands out with his wrists together as if he were waiting to be handcuffed. The officers agreed to that action as they found the student was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was a danger to himself. Occurred on 08/22/09 at 2:44 a.m. 2500 Whitis Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving a red Jeep Wrangler at night without its headlamps illuminated. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 08/23/09 at 1:38 a.m. 200 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was observed soliciting the sales of baseball caps before a UT fan appreciation event. The subject was told he could not solicit sales and was asked by an event staff member to leave. While walking away, the subject continued to sell the baseball caps. A UT police officer then met with the subject and issued him a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 08/22/09 at 7:52 a.m. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 43 alarm calls, 5 “Police Help” call box alarms, 2 fire alarm activations, 8 public assist requests, 1 suspicious activity report, 3 medical emergency assist calls, 1 motor vehicle collision, 1 light malfunction report and 11 unsecured door reports between 08/21/09 and 08/24/09. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
