Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 09/02/09 and Thursday, 09/03/09. ****Administrative Message**** The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please fill complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. Your cell phone number will not be used for any other purpose. If you require any additional information regarding this service, please contact Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. Facilities Services, 1301 East Dean Keeton Suspicious Activity: A UT staff member received a telephone call from a subject advising his company was in the process of serving another UT employee with paperwork from an out of state court. The unidentified subject wanted the staff member to provide him with the other staff members contact information. The staff member became suspicious and notified his supervisor. During the investigating, it was learned the company the subject was representing had been involved in several telephone scams. Occurred on: 9-02-09 at 1:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Hats off to both UT staff members for detecting that something was not right with this telephone call. Most scams that are committed over the telephone or via the internet the con artist is trying to achieve one goal. That goal….getting access to your personal information. Never provide any personal information over the over the telephone or internet, unless you are sure who you are corresponding with. JESTER ACADEMIC CENTER, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A Blackberry cellular telephone and carrying case were stolen from a 3rd floor office. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred between: 8-30-09 and 9-01-09. PARKING LOT 112, 1500 Manor Road Graffiti: Words written in black marker were discovered on a parking sign. Loss value: $50.00. Discovered on: 9-02-09, at 11:52 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief: A UT staff member observed a UT student running towards an exterior door and hitting the door with enough force to break the door hardware. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on: 9-01-09, at 10:45 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Theft: A green Coach purse, containing a multicolored bi-fold wallet, several credit cards, personal identification, $120.00 in cash, cellular telephone and a silver IPod were stolen after being left unattended inside a 3rd floor room. Loss value: $550.00. Occurred on: 9-02-09, between 8:10 PM and 9:40 PM. 1500 BLOCK NORTH IH-35 Driving While Intoxicated: A green Jeep was observed travelling at a high rate of speed. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The non-UT driver admitted that he had consumed only 2 beers in the last two hours. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 9-02-09, at 2:20 AM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: An unknown subject approached a UT police officer and informed the officer three subjects were in Waller Creek smoking marijuana. During the investigation, the officer located three subjects attempting to climb out of the creek bed. All three UT students denied having been smoking anything other than “cigarettes.” When informed that the officer was detecting the odor of burned marijuana on their clothes, one subject admitted that he was in possession of a small amount of marijuana. The subject then handed the officer a plastic baggie that contained a green leafy substance that tested positive for marijuana as well as a metal marijuana grinder. All three subjects were issued field release citations for Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. In addition to the law enforcement actions taken by the officer, all three subjects were issued referrals to the Dean of Student's Office. Occurred on: 9-01-09, at 10:00 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 20 alarm calls, and 3 unsecured door reports between 09/02/09 and 09/03/09.
