The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. Your cell phone number will not be used for any other purpose. If you require any additional information regarding this service, please contact Campus Safety and Security at (512) 471-5767. The theft occurred on 09/06/09 between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: Combination pad locks offer very little security as they are often times defeated easily by someone with the right knowledge and tool. To secure your property inside a locker or foot locker, use a quality, case hardened keyed pad lock. Even then, before you use that lock or any other lock, make sure there are no numbers printed in ink or any stickers on the lock. ROBERT LEE MOORE HALL, 2515 Speedway Suspicious Subjects: A UT faculty member reported seeing two suspicious subjects on the 17th floor of the building on 09/03/09 at approximately 3:00 p.m. The faculty member stated he heard what sounded like two subjects exiting the stairwell by his office and walking down the hall. The faculty member stated he looked toward his office door and observed a male subject appear as if he were going to enter the faculty member's office. When the subject saw the faulty member was watching him, the subject and a female subject walked away. The faculty member stated the description was similar to the description of two theft suspects he had read about in the Campus Watch, so he sent an alert out to members of his department via e-mail. The subjects were described as a black male subject with a light complexion, approximately 5'8” tall and short hair and a black female subject with a dark complexion, heavy set, approximately 5'8” tall and short hair. Reported on 09/04/09 at 2:28 p.m. Crime Prevention Tip: The reporting person did so much in this case that we felt it important to highlight the report. First, he made himself aware of the criminal activity happening around his area by reading the Campus Watch – of course, because you are reading this, I guess I don't need to tell you to do that (that doesn't mean you can't refer this publication to others). The faculty member went on to be aware of his surroundings by hearing the happenings outside of his office, which led to him look at his doorway from his desk. This tells me the faculty member probably has his desk placed facing his doorway. We recommend this to everyone as it allows you to see people as they enter your room and allows you to observe people in the hallway. The faculty member went on to alert his co-workers to the presence of potential thieves in the building. The only other thing I would encourage each of you to do is report suspicious activity to the police department as soon as possible. If these subjects were the suspected thieves from the previous days, this report could have led to the apprehension of the suspects. SIMKINS HALL DORMITORY, 2501 San Jacinto Public Intoxication: A UT student was reported as being “passed out” inside a 2nd floor men's restroom. When the student came to, he had difficulty recognizing the date and time as he believed it was 8:30 p.m. the night before. The student was asked how much alcohol he had consumed to which he replied “double digits.” The student later clarified his alcohol consumption to some degree by stating he had “at least eight 16-ounce cans of beer” at a fraternity rush party. The student was indeed found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself.
