First and foremost, never – ever leave your laptop unsecured. A thief can enter an office and steal a laptop in just a few seconds. In the library, all a thief needs is for you to stand up from your table and take a few steps away and bam – your laptop is stolen. Do not trust laptop cable locks. They only give you a false sense of security and cause you to take risks with your laptop. Laptop cable locks can be cut with small wire cutters in just a second or two. Mark your laptop as your own property. To do this, stop by the police department or by your dormitory front desk and check out an electric engraver. With this tool, you will etch your state issued driver's license number on your property. DO NOT put your name, just your driver's license number. If you would like, Officer Halstead and I can come to your dormitory, campus department or student organization with a slew of electric engravers for you and your cohorts to mark your property on the spot. Call us up and ask for the Make Your Mark program. Finally, look into purchasing a laptop computer tracking software package that can track your laptop on-line in the event it is stolen. Don't forget to use a login name and password and back your data up regularly.
