Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 10/15/09 and Friday, 10/16/09. BRAZOS GARAGE, 210 East MLK Criminal Mischief: The plexi-glass cover to an automated parking pay station was discovered damaged. Video surveillance footage showed a white male subject paying for parking at the machine and then striking the machine several times with his hand. A short time later the paid parking stub was inserted into the garage's exit control device. Other video surveillance footage captured the leaving vehicle's license plate. The investigation continues. Repair cost: $150.00. Occurred on 10/15/09 at 3:20 AM JESSE H. JONES COMMUNICATION CENTER (Bldg B), 2504 Whitis Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A video camera bag containing a Sony Z5U video camera and a rechargeable battery was stolen from the trunk of a red 2005 Toyota Corolla while the vehicle was parked in the service drive located on the east side of the building. The camera bag was later located in a stairwell of building B. The video camera and battery had been stolen from the bag. Loss value: $1,050.00. Occurred on 10/15/09 between 11:25 AM and 11:35 AM. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A silver Samsung E840 cellular telephone was stolen after it was left inside a 3rd floor room for 30 minutes. Loss value: $75.00. Occurred on 10/15/09 between 9:50 PM and 10:20 PM. L. THEO BELLMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was reported as causing a disturbance inside a 2nd floor room and refusing to leave when asked to do so by staff members. The subject was found to have two have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for the possession of alcohol where prohibited and camping in a public place. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 10/15/09 at 1:47 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Graffiti: An unknown subject used a black marker to write illegible letters on the glass window located in elevator #3. Removal cost: $50.00. Discovered on 10/15/09 at 2:27 PM UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as sleeping in the bushes on the west side of the building. After the subject's wake-up call, he was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 10/15/09 at 8:30 AM. WEST PICKLE RESEARCH, 3925 West Braker Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject pulled on the driver's side door handle to a blue Chevrolet Impala to the point the door handle broke away from the door while the vehicle was parked on the northwest side of the building. There were several shopping bags inside the vehicle when the damage occurred. It is believed someone attempted to break into the vehicle to commit a burglary. Repair cost: $100.00. Occurred on 10/14/09 between 5:00 PM and 1:00 AM. 1900 Brazos Disorderly Conduct (language) / Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as yelling profanities and threats as he walked southbound on the sidewalk. The subject's profanities and threats were then directed toward the approaching officers. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 10/15/09 at 7:21 AM. 1300 East Martin Luther King Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject was stopped for running a stop sign and speeding while driving a silver Jeep Cherokee. The subject had evidence on his shirt that suggested he had suffered a severe involuntary physical reaction to the over-consumption of an alcoholic beverage. That evidence and the subsequent field sobriety tests did lend evidence to the fact the subject was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 10/16/09 at 1:12 AM. 200 West 6th Street Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed swerving and swaying heavily before he fell over. Compounding this dangerous behavior was the fact the subject was operating a bicycle on the sidewalk when all of this took place. The subject provided several different accounts as to who owned the bicycle and where he obtained it. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself and pedestrians. Occurred on 10/16/09 at 1:30 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 2 public assist calls, 3 welfare concern reports, 1 motor vehicle collision and 1 unsecure door report between 10/15/09 and 10/16/09. The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
