Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 10/19/09 and Tuesday, 10/20/09. HOMER RAINEY HALL, 200 West 21st Street Theft: A red Schwinn bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the south side of the building. Loss value: $125.00. Occurred between 10/18/09 at 8:00 PM and 10/19/09 at 10:30 AM. JOHN W. HARGIS HALL, 1811 Red River Burglary of Motor Vehicle: An unknown subject entered a UT vehicle and removed the vehicle's fire extinguisher canister. The door to the vehicle was found standing open the next morning. At the time of the initial call, it was unknown if the door to the vehicle had been left unlocked. The discharged canister was later located in a nearby shrub. Occurred between 10/16/09 at 5:00 PM and 10/19/09 at 11:15 AM. PARKING LOT 107, 2500 North IH 35 Driving While Intoxicated / Open Container in a Vehicle: A non-UT subject was found passed out in the driver's seat of a white Chevrolet Suburban while the vehicle was running and the headlamps were turned on. When exiting the vehicle and walking, the subject need the support of his makeshift bedroom to keep him from falling down. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to intoxicated while in care and control of the vehicle. A cup with an alcoholic beverage was located inside the vehicle. Occurred on 10/19/09 at 10:38 PM. PENICK-ALLISON TENNIS CENTER, 1701 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts): Two non-UT subjects were reported as sleeping by the footbridge located on the east side of the tennis complex. Both subjects were awakened and issued written criminal trespass warnings. Occurred on 10/19/09 at 11:45 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found sleeping in a chair located on the 6th floor after the building hours for the library. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and escorted from the building. Occurred on 10/20/09 at 2:25 AM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member reported receiving a suspicious phone message directing her to contact her lawyer regarding a civil suit. After she discovered the phone message was a hoax, she observed a car that resembled the car operated by the subject of the civil suit. The staff member contacted the police department. UT Police officers located the car and observed a non-UT subject approaching the car. The non-UT subject was the subject of the civil suit. The subject stated he was trying to amend the civil suit. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning and advised to not contact the staff member at work. Occurred on 10/19/09 at 4:55 PM. SUTTON HALL, 210 West 21st Street Theft: A white Felt F85 road bike was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the east side of the building. The bicycle had been awarded to the owner after he completed a 70 day, 4,000 mile bike ride to Alaska in support of cancer research. Loss value: $1,500.00. Occurred on 10/19/09 between 2:55 PM and 4:15 PM. UT ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 1616 Guadalupe Burglary: 14 handheld 2-way radios, 3 cellular telephones, a light meter, a box of fasteners, a digital camera, a computer keyboard, a cordless drill, 2 laptop computers, a tool set, a computer flash drive and $515.00 in cash was stolen from a construction area located on the 2nd floor of the building that was closed to the public. Loss value: $3,615.00. Occurred between 10/17/09 at 6:00 PM and 10/19/09 at 6:00 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 21 alarm calls, 1 “Police Help” call box activation, 1 fire alarm activation, 2 public assist calls, 1 found property and 1 medical emergency assist between 10/19/09 and 10/20/09. The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety. Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks. To view a map of the campus visit: http://www.utexas.edu/parking/maps/index.html RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that cover assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
