Report for 10/23/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Thursday, 10/22/09 and Friday, 10/23/09. ****Austin Police Department Press Release**** Please see the attached press release and suspect sketch from the Austin Police Department regarding a recent Burglary and Attempted Sexual Assault. Anyone having information about this case or the suspect should call the Austin Police Department Sex Crimes Unit at 512-974-5095 AT&T EXECUTIVE EDUCATION & CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject(s) removed a fire extinguisher from a 4th floor hallway cabinet and discharged the extinguisher in the hallway when there was no fire present. Clean-up Cost: $80.00. Occurred on 10/23/09 at 2:48 AM. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A black Marin Kenfield bicycle was stolen when it was “secured” with a cable lock to a light pole located on the west side of the building. Loss value: $500.00. Occurred on 10/22/09 between 3:15 PM and 10:00 AM. LITTLEFIELD CARRIAGE HOUSE, 2410 Whitis Theft: While walking from a class, a UT student placed a cell phone call. The subject became very engaged in the phone call and placed his laptop computer case containing a Dell laptop computer and a textbook on the ground near a brick perimeter wall surrounding the building. The student began to pace back and forth as he continued the phone conversation. The student stated he walked as far as 40 feet away from his laptop case. When the student ended the phone conversation, he walked back to where he had placed his laptop case and discovered the case had been stolen. Loss value: $2,000.00. Occurred on 10/22/09 between 2:00 PM and 2:45 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Everyday distractions like cell phone calls are a thief's best friend. In this case, the student was in eyesight of his property when it was stolen. Sadly, all the thief needed was a few seconds when the student was not looking to walk by the case, pick it up and walk off. If you find you are in need of making an important call, take the time to find a location where you can secure your property and safely make the phone call. PENICK-ALLISON TENNIS CENTER, 1701 Trinity Criminal Trespass / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was reported as sleeping on the east side of the tennis courts. Once the subject was awakened, it was discovered he had previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning. The subject was also found to have five outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for failure to appear in five different criminal cases. Occurred on 10/22/09 at 9:21 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A brown Jansport backpack containing clothes, two paperback books and an umbrella was stolen while the backpack was placed on the floor under a 6th floor study cubicle where the owner of the backpack was sitting. Loss value: $30.00. Occurred on 10/22/09 between 11:05 AM and 4:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Space is a commodity on campus. You cannot always have your backpack on the table in front of you. Sometimes you do need to place your backpack or purse on the floor under your chair. Do yourself a favor, loop your foot through the shoulder strap of your backpack or purse. This will prevent a thief from crawling under a table and dragging your backpack off without being noticed. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A non-UT subject placed her backpack containing a text book, a pen set, an umbrella and 2 sets of lecture notes by a 4th floor window on the east side of the building and went to the reference room. The subject believed her friend was keeping an eye on her backpack. The friend later stated she did not know the subject had left the area so she was not watching the backpack. When the subject returned from the reference room, she discovered her back pack had been stolen. The friend did notice a suspicious person in the area during the time frame of the theft. The friend stated the subject was sitting at a nearby table for a lengthy time frame just looking at the table. The subject was not reading or studying anything. The subject was described as a white male, approximately 5'11” tall with short brown “oily” hair. The subject was last seen wearing a dark long sleeve shirt (which may have had horizontal stripes) and pants. Loss value: $140.00. Occurred on 10/22/09 between 3:50 PM and 4:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Often times students will leave their property unattended when they believe friends or even unknown students are in the area and will “keep an eye” on their property. You should never trust another person to maintain the security of your property. Instead of leaving your property behind when you run an errand or go to get a drink of water, consider taking it with you. Then you will know it is protected. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft (2 counts): Two UT students left their backpacks inside a 2nd floor room while they went to get something to eat. Upon returning to the room, the students discovered their backpacks had been opened and rifled through. Each student had a textbook stolen from their backpacks. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on 10/22/09 between 6:40 PM and 8:00 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A black Haro Flightline 2DX bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the northwest side of the library. Loss value: $470.00. Occurred on 10/22/09 between 9:00 PM and 10:30 PM. 400 West Martin Luther King Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed yelling at passing vehicles and walking into lanes of traffic when it was not clear to do so. There was evidence on the front of the subject's pants that he had either been thoroughly scared by the passing cars or that the depressant effect of alcohol had impacted his bladder. The subject was indeed under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself and to passing motorists. Occurred on 10/22/09 at 11:45 PM. 2300 Robert Dedman Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of Marijuana: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving a blue GMC pick-up truck at night without the rear tail lights turned on. Once stopped, the subject called his wife and stated he had been stopped near 15th Street. When the subject exited his vehicle, the officer noticed a stain on the front of the subject's pants that proved the adage that alcohol is merely rented. The subject asked how the officer was going to help him to get out of the situation. To get out of this situation, the officer would have had to transport the subject back in time before the subject had consumed alcoholic beverage to the point he would end up driving while intoxicated. The subject was also found to be in possession of a plastic bag containing .05 ounce of marijuana. Occurred on 10/22/09 at 9:13 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 16 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 1 stuck elevator call, 3 welfare concern reports, 1 suspicious activity report, 1 suspicious odor report and 2 unsecured door reports between 10/22/09 and 10/23/09. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety.
