Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 10/23/09 and Monday, 10/26/09. ****Austin Police Department Press Release**** The Austin Police Department announced an arrest has been made in the Burglary / Attempted Sexual Assault case hi-lighted in the Campus Watch last week. Anyone having information about this case or the suspect should call the Austin Police Department Sex Crimes Unit at 512-974-5095 ACES BUILDING, 201 East 24th Street Theft: A UT student reported the theft of two plastic paint brushes, two Koi water color kits and a 8” X 11” painting. During the investigation, the officer learned these items had been left unattended on top of an open work cubical located on the second floor. Loss value: $20.00. Occurred between: 10-23-09 at 7:00 PM and 0-25-09, at 8:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Desire, Ability and Opportunity. These are the three things a thief needs in order to be a successful thief. There is nothing any of us can do about a thief's ability or desire to commit a theft; however, we can all work to remove or eliminate a thief's opportunity to commit a theft. There are some very simple things we can do, like locking up our property when we have a need to leave it unattended. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Theft: A UT student reported her purse containing $40.00 in cash, a cellular telephone, personal identification, and a debit card were stolen after being left unattended under a box near the east entrance doors. During the investigation the purse, minus its contents was recovered inside a 3rd level women's restroom. Loss value: $90.00. Occurred on: 10-25-09, between 2:45 PM and 3:00 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A red Trek was stolen after being left unsecured and unattended inside an 8th floor study room. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 10-22-09 and 10-23-09. LBJ FOUNTAIN AND OVERLOOK, 2300 Block Robert Dedman Graffiti: A UT student discovered words and letters spray painted in red, white and maroon colors. During the investigation, UT police officers discovered addition areas near the fountain that had also received a polite reminder to all of the UT football fans of an up-coming Big 12 football match up. Estimated Damage: $1,000.00. Discovered on: 10-24-09, at 7:37 AM. LBJ LIBRARY, 2305 Robert Dedman Graffiti: A symbol of a uniquely male body part, along with words were discovered in black spray paint next to the grand stair case. Estimated loss: $100.00. Discovered on: 10-24-09, at 2:39 AM. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Suspicious Person: An unknown subject approached a UT student on three separate occasions and asked her the same question, “Where's Belmont Hall?” The first encounter occurred in July, the last encounter happened on 10-25-09. In all of the encounters the student gave the subject directions to Belmont, the subject would then turn and walk in the opposite direction. The unknown subject is described as: White male, 30 years of age, very average looking. The subject was last seen wearing a ball cap, shorts and a t-shirt. Occurred on: 10-25-09, at 5:00 PM. PARKING LOT 39, 2300 Block Red River Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT student discovered an unknown subject had entered into his vehicle and removed his AM / FM / CD stereo. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 10-23-09, between 10:30 AM and 4:15 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: Several textbooks were stolen from a secured locker located on the third floor. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred between 10-23-09 and 10-25-09. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student discovered nine textbooks and a white Hurley ball cap had been removed from a secured locker located on the third floor. The following day, the UT-student observed two subjects walking together inside the library one of the subjects was wearing the victim's white Hurley ball cap. The victim confronted the subjects and recovered his ball cap. The unknown subject wearing the ball cap left the library. The victim attempted to identify both subjects before the officers arrived. The unknown subjects are described as: First subject: White male, 20 years of age, short hair and facial hair. Last seen wearing a grey jacket. Second subject: Hispanic male, 20 years of age. Last seen wearing a grey and black sleeved jacket, and a black UT Longhorn ball cap. Loss value: $550.00. Occurred on: 10-23-09, between 12:01 AM and 6:00 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported her textbook was stolen after being left unsecured and unattended on top of a study desk located on the 4th floor. Loss value: $70.00. Occurred on: 10-23-09, between 5:30 PM and 8:00 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: Two UT students secured four textbooks inside a locked locker located on the 6th floor. Upon their return, the students discovered their property had been stolen. Loss value: $215.00. Occurred on: 10-23-09, between 11:00 AM and 3:15 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A Sharp electronic dictionary was removed from a backpack after the backpack and its contents were left unsecured and unattended on top of a study desk. During the investigation, the student stated there was a suspicious person in the area prior to the theft. The unknown subject was described as a white male with grey hair. The subject was last seen wearing a brown jacket and yellow hiking boots. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 10-23-09, between 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM. 2200 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Driving While Intoxicated / Driving Without a License: A UT police officer observed a Honda travelling westbound in the 500 block east 23rd Street with a burned out headlamp. During the traffic investigation, the officer learned the non-UT driver was not a licensed driver. The driver informed the officer that she needed to pick up her husband who had been drinking alcohol. The subject contacted her husband and informed him he needed to find a sober person to pick her up and drive their vehicle. A short time later the husband arrived driving a Saturn. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The subject's eyes were glassy and bloodshot. The subject admitted to having consumed three beers. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The subject displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. The first driver was issued a field release citation for Driving Without a License. Occurred on: 10-25-09, at 1:55 AM. 2500 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Assist Outside Agency / Speeding / Disregard a Stop Sign / Driving with an Invalid License: A UT police officer observed a black Ford Explorer travelling at a high rate of speed run through a controlled intersection without stopping. During the traffic investigation, the officer soon learned the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody for the outside agency arrest warrants and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken the subject was issued two citations for Driving with an Invalid License and Speeding. Occurred on: 10-25-09, at 1:29 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 39 alarm calls, 6 fire alarm activation, 4 call box alarms, 3 welfare concern reports, 1 collision report, 4 EMS reports, and 12 unsecured door reports between 10/23/09 and 10/26/09.
