Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 11/03/09 and Wednesday, 11/04/09. ****Traffic Safety Concern**** The safety of pedestrians, bicyclists and motor vehicle drivers on college campuses has always been a concern – not just on this campus, but every campus. Evidence of this can be seen in the posted speed limit of 15 miles per hour on campus. Often times, people believe the safety of our roadways is the sole responsibility of vehicle drivers. This is simply not the case. Everyone shares the responsibility of roadway safety. Vehicle drivers, make sure you maintain the speed limit and actually slow down when you recognize a potential hazard. Have patience, stay alert while driving and refrain from distracting activities like talking on the cell phone, texting or eating. Bicyclist, keep in mind you and your bicycle are considered a vehicle in Texas. With that in mind, ride your bicycle in the right hand lane; not on the left side of the street or on the sidewalk. Maintain the posted speed limit – at 15 MPH, a bicyclist could be in danger of speeding. You should also pedal with the belief that other vehicles and pedestrians around you can't see you. Finally, pedestrians, please keep in mind there are other forms of transportation moving around you. These other forms are often travelling faster than you are and carry more mass. A collision between a pedestrian and a motor vehicle or even a bicycle results in more injury to the pedestrian than the other person(s) involved in the collision. As a pedestrian, stay out of the roadway whenever possible. The roadway is occupied by cars, buses, trucks and bicyclists. It is much harder to get struck by one of the aforementioned if you are not in the space they occupy. That means you should not walk in the roadway or cross the street midblock. Vehicle drivers and bicyclist do not expect to see you stepping out from between two parked cars to cross the street – sometimes they don't see you at all. Many of us like to listen to music while driving, cycling or walking. This is a dangerous proposition for all of us when it comes to traffic safety. If you are preoccupied by the car radio or the MP3 player to the point you can't hear what is happening around you then you may not hear the sounds of danger approaching. While driving, turn the radio down. While cycling or walking, only use one ear-bud to listen to your MP3 player. ****Theft Stat Countdown**** Yesterday, I was asked to check on theft stats for this past year. In true workaholic fashion, I decided to check for theft stats since 2006. I discovered UT is only 27 reported thefts away from tying the lowest theft rate we have had in four years. There are 57 days left in 2009. My goal is always to prevent all thefts, but it sure would be a nice end to the calendar year knowing we had the lowest theft rate in four years. Let's all do our part to prevent thefts. Make sure you keep your office or dorm room door closed and locked. Mark your property with your state issued driver's license number. Use a quality u-lock and a cable lock to secure your bicycle. Be sure to report suspicious activity to the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. Finally, never, ever leave your property unattended. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A blue Roadmaster bicycle was stolen while it was “secured†with a cable lock to the bicycle racks located on the west side of the gymnasium. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between 10/29/09 at 10:00 AM and 10/30/09 at 7:00 PM. TRINITY GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A silver colored Sony digital camera was stolen from the glove compartment of a car while the car was parked on the 5th level of the garage. The owner of the vehicle believed she had locked the car doors when she parked, but stated she used her remote door lock device and did not check to make sure the doors had locked. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between 11/02/09 at 12:30 AM and 11/03/09 at 6:30 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as digging in a trash can on the basement level underground. The subject refused to leave when a Union Building staff member directed him to do so. The subject left after he was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 11/03/09 at 5:29 PM. 1800 Guadalupe Driving While Intoxicated: A UT police officer observed a green Volkswagon NSG 2-door blocking a traffic lane. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer discovered why the vehicle was stopped in the traffic lane as the interior of the vehicle showed the driver's intense urge to purge prevented her from being able to drive. The driver, a UT student, was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 11/04/09 at 11:48 PM. 200 East Jester Circle Drive Theft: A UT student advised the rear license plate to his moped had been stolen while it was parked in the motorcycle parking spaces located on the south side of the roadway. The investigation showed a second moped was missing its rear license plate and a third moped that was missing one of the license plate mounting bolts. Loss value: $25.00. Occurred between 10/31/09 at 4:30 PM and 11/03/09 at 3:30 PM. 2800 San Jacinto Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was found sleeping beside Waller Creek in the 2800 block of San Jacinto. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for criminal mischief. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 11/03/09 at 1:51 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 11 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 2 “police Help†callbox activations, 1 suspicious activity report, 1 welfare concern report, 1 found property report, 1 accidental damage report and 13 unsecured door reports between 11/03/09 and 11/04/09. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need.
