Report for 12/09/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 12-08-09 and Wednesday, 12-09-09. ****Theft Stat Countdown**** We are 02 reported thefts from tying the lowest theft rate we have had in four years. There are 22 days left in 2009. While reviewing today's Campus Watch entries, keep in mind a burglary of motor vehicle is not listed as a theft. While a theft did occur during the burglary, a burglary of motor vehicle is a whole different category of crime. Our goal is always to prevent all thefts, but it sure would be a nice end to the calendar year knowing we had the lowest theft rate in four years. Let's all do our part to prevent thefts. Make sure you keep your office or dorm room door closed and locked. Mark your property with your state issued driver's license number. Use a quality u-lock and a cable lock to secure your bicycle. Be sure to report suspicious activity to the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. Finally, never, ever leave your property unattended. The end of the year means it is time to start submitting your favorite or funny entries for the Best of 2009. If there is a Campus Watch entry that you found most informative, entertaining or just downright humorous, please submit the entry or description of the case to Officer Halstead at Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu or Officer William Pieper at photocop@mail.utexas.edu We will compile a list of the top ten for the year and send it out for your reading enjoyment. MOORE-HILL DORMITORY, 214 East 21ST Street Possession of Marijuana: A UT staff member reported a UT student was discovered smoking marijuana inside a stairwell. During the investigation the student denied having been smoking marijuana in the stairwell, but admitted he was in possession of a small amount of marijuana. The student handed the officer a clear plastic baggy that contained a green leafy substance that the officer recognized to be marijuana. The subject was issued a field release citation for Possession of Marijuana. Occurred on: 12-08-09, at 10:00 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Street Graffiti: Words were discovered written in green spray paint as well as permanent marker along the northwest exterior wall of the parking garage. Est. loss: $50.00. Discovered on: 12-07-09, at 12:55. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: With finals rapidly approaching, many students are squeezing every minute of the day to make sure they make the most of their educational opportunities – simply put; there is a lot of cramming going on. Sadly, thieves know that this time of year not only brings an increase in demand, it also affords more opportunities in the form of preoccupied students. Don't make a thief's “shopping season” easy. Be mindful that when you are studying in the library, the thief is studying you. Watching and waiting for you to leave your property for just a few seconds. That is all it takes for the thief to complete his or her shopping list. Never leave your property unattended – not even to get a drink of water from a nearby water fountain. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 15 alarm calls, 1 public assist request, and 3 unsecured door report between 12-08-09 and 12-09-09. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or via e-mail to Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu.
