Report for 12/10/2009

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 12-09-09 and Thursday, 12-10-09. ****Theft Stat Countdown**** We are 02 reported thefts from tying the lowest theft rate we have had in four years. There are 20 days left in 2009. While reviewing today's Campus Watch entries, keep in mind a burglary of motor vehicle is not listed as a theft. While a theft did occur during the burglary, a burglary of motor vehicle is a whole different category of crime. Our goal is always to prevent all thefts, but it sure would be a nice end to the calendar year knowing we had the lowest theft rate in four years. Let's all do our part to prevent thefts. Make sure you keep your office or dorm room door closed and locked. Mark your property with your state issued driver's license number. Use a quality u-lock and a cable lock to secure your bicycle. Be sure to report suspicious activity to the UT Police Department at 512-471-4441. Finally, never, ever leave your property unattended. The end of the year means it is time to start submitting your favorite or funny entries for the Best of 2009. If there is a Campus Watch entry that you found most informative, entertaining or just downright humorous, please submit the entry or description of the case to Officer Halstead at Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu or Officer William Pieper at photocop@mail.utexas.edu We will compile a list of the top ten for the year and send it out for your reading enjoyment. JOHNSON WILDFLOWER CENTER, 4801 LaCrosse Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT staff member discovered the passenger side window of a silver Ford broken out. During the investigation, the officer located the owner of the vehicle and learned an Ann Cline purse containing $50.00 had been stolen after being left in plain view on the front seat. Loss value: $85.00. Damage to vehicle: $150.00. Occurred on: 12-09-09, between 8:00 AM and 9:45 AM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed staggering three steps to the left then swaying three steps to the right while in a crouched position. The subject's actions were animated to a point of slow motion. During the investigation, the officer learned the subject had been celebrating the end of the semester with his friends, but could not remember where they were. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 12-10-09, at 12:32 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: Finals are in the final countdown mode. Many of us are also counting down the days to the Holiday Break. Historically during the Holiday Break, there is an increase in the number of burglaries. Many staff members tend to leave personal property out in plain view. Faculty members make arrangements for the buildings to be left unsecured. I would like to recommend to everyone to start making plans for the security of your building, office and labs. Develop a game plan with your staff as to how your building will be operating during this time. Over the last several days I have been receiving several emails from students that are concerned about their property and vehicles over the Holiday Break. These are the recommendations that were given in reply to those emails. Make all of your property with your State issued DL or ID card number Secure all of your valuables If you are leaving your vehicle on campus Park your vehicle in a well lighted area where there is a lot of traffic Remove all of your property from inside your vehicle This includes CDs, power cords as well as loose change CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 17 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm, 1 collision report, and 3 unsecured door reports between 12-09-09 and 12-10-09. Contact UT Police at 471-4441 if you have any information regarding any of the above incidents or call 911 regarding suspicious persons, suspicious activities or crime. Your call may help solve or prevent a crime. Campus Watch comments should be directed to Officer Darrell Halstead at 512-232-9634 or via e-mail to Darrell.halstead@austin.utexas.edu.
