Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 12/21/09 and Monday, 01/04/10. ****Campus Watch Top Ten Entries for 2009**** Number 10 comes in as a simple type-o that had several people in stitches. One person even responded with, “I am astounded that UT officers would resort to such cruel punishment that they would actually BOO an accused offender. Don't you know that such punishment could severely harm the subject's self esteem??? We can't have THAT, now can we??” BRACKENRIDGE APARTMENTS, 3300 Lake Austin Blvd. Assault with Injuries / Family Violence: The UT Police Department responded to a 911 call. During the investigation, the officers learned a UT student had been involved in an assault. The suspect was taken into custody for Assault with Injuries / Family Violence and was transported to Central Booing. Occurred on: 5-29-09, at 12:37 AM. ****Scam Alert**** A UT Police employee received an e-mail today from a subject claiming to be a postal inspector. The e-mail advised that a parcel was held as being suspicious as it contained a credit or cash card in the amount of $1,500,00.00. The e-mail then directed the receiver to click on various links to file an affidavit to have the funds released. This is a scam. Keep in mind if something sounds too good to be true then it probably is. Never click web links form an unsolicited e-mail sender. 27th Street Garage, 109 East 27th Street Criminal Mischief: An unknown person(s) broke the rear window out of a grey 2007 Mazda hatchback as the vehicle was parked and unattended on the 4th level of the parking garage. The gas inlet lid was partially open and the gas cap loosened. The owner of the vehicle could not be contacted. At the time of the discovery, it was unknown if any items were stolen form the vehicle. Repair cost: $30.00. Discovered on 12/24/09 at 11:35 PM. ARNO NOWOTNY BUILDING, 709 East MLK Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject removed a wood panel that covered the crawl space opening under a deck located on the south side of the building. Repair cost: $150.00. Discovered on 01/04/10 at 12:20 AM. AT&T EXECUTIVE EDUCATION & CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Leaving the Scene Collision: A 2004 Toyota minivan proved to not be “mini” enough as an unknown vehicle struck its driver's side door and side mirror. The driver of the striking vehicle drove away from the scene without leaving driver information. Repair cost: $1,200.00. Occurred between 12/31/09 at 12 midnight and 01/01/10 at 12:30 PM. CALHOUN HALL, #4 South Mall Criminal Mischief: An unknown person(s) broke a 12” by 10” glass window insert to a 1st floor stairwell door. Repair cost: $125.00. Occurred on 12/22/09 between 4:30 PM and 11:34 PM. CHEMICAL AND PETROLEUM ENGINEERING, 200 East Dean Keeton Criminal Mischief: An unknown object was used to make a small hole in a metal door located on the northwest side of the building. Repair cost: $50.00. Discovered on 12/28/09 at 9:52 PM. COLORADO APARTMENTS, 2501 Lake Austin Blvd Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered the rear window broken out of a parked 1994 Ford Escort station wagon while the vehicle was parked by building L. The owner of the vehicle could not be located. At the time of the report, it was unknown if any items were stolen from the vehicle. Repair cost: $300.00. Discovered on 12/23/09 at 2:38 AM. DARRELL K ROYAL TX MEMORIAL STADIUM, 405 East 23rd Street Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer observed a on-UT subject climbing over the closed and secured gate to the stadium. The subject was then seen running around the stadium. The subject was taken into custody after climbing the fence to exit the stadium. Occurred on 12/22/09 at 12:45 AM. DELL PEDIATRIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE, 1400 Barbara Jordan Criminal Mischief: An unknown object was used to shatter a 10' by 6' windowpane located on the southwest side of the building. A second window, located on the east side of the building, had also been broken. The east window was not shattered and showed the damage was caused by a small object impacting the exterior side of the window. Repair cost: $800.00. Discovered on 12/26/09 at 9:42 AM. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red river Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Criminal Trespass Warning: While working a special event, one of UT's Finest observed a known thief walking by one of the entry doors to the events center. The subject appeared to be attempting to conceal an item in his jacket as he walked. When the subject was stopped, he was found to be in possession of a metal pipe that contained burned marijuana residue. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 12/28/09 at 4:32 PM. GATEWAY APARTMENTS, 1632 West 6th Street Burglary of Motor Vehicle: An in-dash AM/FM/CD player stereo, a bag containing three pair of sunglasses, a pair of jumper cables and two CD cases containing a total of 106 audio compact discs were stolen from a Ford Ranger pick-up truck while the truck was parked by building 1632. The owner of the truck locked the doors when the truck was parked. Both doors were found unlocked when the burglary was discovered. The truck's rear sliding window was not equipped with a lock. Loss value: $550.00. Occurred between 12/20/09 at 8:00 PM and 12/21/09 at 11:30 AM. GEORGE I. SANCHEZ BUILDING, 1912 Speedway Burglary of a Coin Operated Machine (3 counts): The doors to feminine hygiene dispensing machines located in two 3rd floor women's restrooms and a 4th floor women's restroom were forced open. The coin boxes in each machine were stolen from the machines. At the time of the report, the amount of money stolen was not known. Repair cost: $150.00. Occurred between 12/18/09 and 12/21/09 at 9:54 PM. HOMER RAINEY HALL, 200 West 21st Street Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was found inside a 1st floor room that was under construction. The subject stated he had gained continual access to the building by “rigging” a window to look secured when in fact it was not secured. Occurred on 12/24/09 at 1:25 PM. JESSE H. JONES COMMUNICATION CENTER, Building A, 2504 Whitis Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was reported as following custodial staff member around the building while laughing. When the officer asked the laughing subject what was so funny, the subject replied “Your face.” The officer's face was not as amusing when it as learned the subject had two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for blocking a public sidewalk. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 12/21/09 at 8:53 PM. MAIN BUILDING, #1 South Mall Criminal Mischief: A pencil was used to write words on a wall located in an 11th floor stairwell. Removal cost: $5.00. Discovered on 12/29/09 at 8:00 AM. MIKE A.MYERS TRACK & SOCCER STADIUM, 707 Clyde Littlefield Graffiti (2 counts) / Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts): While on a break, a UT Police Dispatcher observed two non-UT subjects using purple spray paint to write letters on several cement pillars located on the north side of the stadium. When the responding officer arrived, he observed one of the subjects painting an exterior wall of the stadium's ticket office. The other subject was standing by while holding the leash to his pet dog. The investigation showed the subjects were responsible for using the paint marks on several pillars, the ticket office, the UT Child Development Center on Comal Street, the UT University Interscholastic League building on Manor Road and two City of Austin owned Smart Cars while the cars were parked in their designated spaces in the 2200 block of Red River Street. As if the dispatcher and officer eyewitnesses were not enough to make an arrest, it was discovered that the letters the primary culprit painted on all of these objects were also tattooed on his knuckles. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the two subjects were issued a written criminal trespass warning. The dog, while not filed on, was taken into custody and transported to a local animal shelter to await the release of his human companion. Repair cost: $2,000.00. Occurred on 01/01/10 at 6:40 PM. O' HENRY HALL, 601 Colorado Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as sleeping on the entry porch located on the south side of the building. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 12/23/09 at 2:10 AM. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Graffiti: An unknown object was used to etch a symbol into the concrete located by the 1st floor southeast stairwell of the garage. Repair cost: $125.00. Discovered on 12/29/09 at 4:10 PM. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts): While investigating the above graffiti case, UT Finest located two non-UT subjects sitting in the southeast stairwell of the garage. There was no evidence linking the two subjects to the graffiti case. Both subjects were issued a written criminal trespass warning citation. Occurred on 12/29/09 at 4:15 PM. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts): Two non-UT subjects were reported as looking at bicycles at the bicycle racks located on the west side of the dormitory. The investigating officer found two subjects matching the description standing in the bicycle racks located on the southwest side of Prather Dormitory. One of the two subjects stated they were walking through campus on their way to Bible study but could not remember the location of their Bible study. Both subjects were issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 12/29/09 at 1:00 PM. SERVICE BUILDING, 304 East 24th Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found sleeping in loading dock of the building. The subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 01/03/10 at 7:20 AM. STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING, 100 West Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass Warning / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was found sitting a t receptionist desk in the 1st floor lobby using the telephone. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for the possession of drug paraphernalia. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning citation. Occurred on 12/29/09 at 12:35 PM. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass: A non-UT subject was reported as sitting on a couch located in a student lounge that was reserved for use by faculty, staff and students. The student was found to have previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning and was subsequently taken into custody. Occurred on 01/03/10 at 7:30 PM. WALTER WEBB HALL, 2500 Guadalupe Criminal Trespass Warning (2 counts): Two non-UT subjects were found loitering under the covered parking located on the west side of the building. Both subjects were issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 12/29/09 at 12:25 PM 600 Colorado Street Driving While Intoxicated / Open Container in a Vehicle: A non-UT subject was stopped while driving a black 2004 Honda sport utility vehicle the wrong way on a one-way roadway. The subject refused to exit the vehicle when ordered to do so. His reason for refusing was out of inability due to intoxication not defiance as when the subject did exit, he promptly fell back into the vehicle. The subject required the stability of the sport utility to stand and walk. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. Two open bottles of beer were found inside the vehicle. Occurred on 12/26/09 at 3:00 AM. 1900 Comal Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of a Controlled Substance / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of a Fictitious Driver's License: A non-UT subject, who was under the age of 21, was stopped for running a red light while driving a blue 2004 Chevrolet 4-door. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. The subject was found to be in possession of a plastic bag containing 1.01 grams of cocaine and a hand rolled cigar containing .025 ounces of marijuana and a fictitious Texas driver's license which purported the subject to be older than 21 years of age. Occurred on 01/01/10 at 1:00 AM. 2200 Guadalupe Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject flagged down a UT Police Officer and pointed out a subject who was seen fleeing from a nearby apartment complex in which the reporting person heard glass being broken and saw a broken out window in a 1st floor apartment. The subject was stopped and found to have two outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for pedestrian in the roadway. While a UT Officer handled the wanted subject, members of the Austin Police Department arrived on scene and began to investigate the report of the broken window. Occurred on 12/27/09 at 10:14 AM. 2400 Guadalupe Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject was stopped for blocking a lane of traffic, making an illegal left hand turn and running a red light while driving a white Chevrolet pick-up truck. The subject stated she had “a couple” of drinks, which later turned into “three or four” drinks and finally an admission to having “six” beers. The field sobriety tests showed the final statement as to the amount of drinks was probably the most correct one as she was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 12/24/09 at 2:35 AM. 200 East Jester Circle Driving While Intoxicated / Public Intoxication: A UT police officer observed a damaged traffic control stanchion in the roadway. The damage was consistent with a vehicle striking the stanchion. A short distance away, the officer observed a white 1994 Nissan 4-door stopped in the middle of a pedestrian plaza. As the officer approached the vehicle on foot, a non-UT subject exited the vehicle from the driver's door and went to the trunk to “get the spare tire.” The officer observed damage to the side of the vehicle that was consistent with the damage to the traffic control stanchion. The officer also noticed a second non-UT subject passed out on the rear seat of the vehicle. That subject was only half dressed. The driver was believed to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. The half dressed passenger was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport the subject to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 12/27/09 at 7:35 AM. 1800 Lavaca Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving a white 2009 Saturn at night without its headlamps activated. The subject stated she had consumed two alcoholic beverages at a nearby bar where she works. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 12/30/09 at 2:23 AM. 1900 San Jacinto Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was stopped for driving the wrong way on a one-way roadway in a white Ford Explorer. The subject was found to have 4 outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for speeding, failing to display a driver's license (2 warrants) and for the possession of drug paraphernalia. Occurred on 12/23/09 at 11:47 AM. 1900 San Jacinto Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed having a difficult time walking and an even more difficult time climbing the stairs to a foot bridge over Waller Creek as the subject fell during this attempt. The subject stated he believed he was on 11th Street or 12th Street which is where he parked his car (which was obviously a stretch limo to be parked the length of two blocks). The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself. Occurred on 01/02/10 at 3:51 AM. 2000 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated: A non-UT subject was stopped for speeding and running a stop sign while driving a grey 2004 Honda Accord. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. Occurred on 01/01/10 at 2:20 AM. 200 West 6th Street Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was found sitting in the roadway. The subject was not able to stand or walk without assistance. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself. Occurred on 01/01/10 at 2:25 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 117 alarm calls, 8 fire alarm activations, 2 “Police Help” callbox activations, 1 stuck elevator, 2 light malfunction reports, 2 medical emergency assists, 28 public assist requests, 1 accidental damage report, 1 water leak, 2 welfare concern reports, 2 found property reports, 4 suspicious activity reports and 57 unsecured door reports between 12/21/09 and 01/04/10. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
