Report for 01/05/2010

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 01/04/10 and Tuesday, 01/05/10. ****Campus Watch Top Ten Entries for 2009**** Number 9 brings me back to my childhood and my favorite beverage… # 9 PARKING LOT 27, 2600 Whitis Public Intoxication / Consumption of alcohol by a Minor: A UT Student, who was under the age of 21, was observed being held upright by two other people. The student stated she had consumed four, shot-sized, glasses of clear Kool-Aid. Obviously the “Kool-Aid” packed quite a punch – Oh, Yeah! When officers began to inquire if the “Kool-Aid” contained any liquid substances of an adult variety, the student became worried she had been dosed and exclaimed that someone might be “setting me [her] up for the 'okey-dokey'.” The student was about to be turned over to one of her sober, responsible friends who had been acting as one of her literal support posts when she began to forcefully present internal evidence of her night's consumptions. The student was sat on the ground and soon fell over. Imagine if you will, the officers describing this case to me. The words “splat” and “thump” were used more times than not. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport her to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 02/26/09 at 1:06 a.m. BURDINE HALL, 2505 University Theft: A backpack containing two text books and a Dell laptop computer was stolen from under a student desk located inside a 2nd floor classroom while the owner turned in a final examination at the front of the classroom. Loss value: $1,300.00. Occurred on 12/17/09 at approximately 3:50 PM. Reported on 01/04/10 at 4:30 PM. 2100 Guadalupe Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed walking in the middle of the roadway. At one point, the subject “banged” on the top of a vehicle that was stopped for a red light. Once the police officer was able to get the subject out of the roadway, it was determined that the subject was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was deemed to be a danger to herself. Occurred on 01/04/10 at 6:40 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 25 alarm calls, 1 light malfunction report, 2 public assist requests and 4 unsecured door reports between 01/04/10 and 01/05/10. If you are a faculty or staff member that has been affected by a crime, the UT Employee Assistance Program (471-3366) is available for counseling and referrals to other appropriate services. http://www.utexas.edu/hr/eap/ Emergency Text Message Service The University of Texas at Austin and its police department are responsible for notifying faculty, staff, and students of emergency situations (e.g., inclement weather, building evacuations, campus closures, etc.). The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety.
