Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between and Tuesday, 02/02/10 and Wednesday, 02/03/10. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: An Apple iPhone and carrying case were stolen from the bleachers located next to the basketball courts on the 3rd floor. During the investigation, the officer learned the former owner of the iPhone had been playing basketball while his property was discovered by a new owner. Loss value: $255.00. Occurred on: 2-01-10, between 9:15 PM and 9:35 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: On January 20, 2010 we announced what the top five items that were most likely to be stolen at UT, cellular telephones made that list. Since 1-17-2010 there have been 7 reported thefts from Gregory Gym. Of those reported thefts, 5 wallets and 2 cellular telephones were stolen. The majority of thefts occurred on or near the basketball courts. NEURAL & MOLECULAR SCIENCE BUILDING, 2506 Speedway Burglary of Coin-Operated Machines: A UT staff member discovered the front door to a feminine product dispensing machine appeared to have been forced open and both product and money was missing. During the investigation the officers learned the feminine product machines in the women's restrooms located on the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th floors had also been damaged. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 2-02-10, at 11:53 AM. NURSING SCHOOL, 1710 Red River Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported approaching students and asking them if they were interested in selling him their textbooks. A second report was received where the same subject had knocked lightly on a professor's door and was startled to see the professor sitting at his desk. Again the subject claimed to be buying textbooks. The officers located the subject and issued him a written Criminal Trespass Warning. The non-UT subject is described as: White male, 24 years of age, 6'-01”, and 175 pounds. Subject has short brown hair, blue eyes, and is clean shaven. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue short-sleeve shirt. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the officers discovered the subject was in possession of seven textbooks. Occurred on: 2-02-10, at 4:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: All of the reporting staff members did a Great Job in recognizing a suspicious person and taking the steps in notifying the Police Department quickly. The officers did a good job in trying to locate a professor to see if some of the textbooks had been taken from her office. The sad part, this subject will be back. PETER T FLAWN ACADEMIC CENTER, #2 West Mall Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported attempting to sell magazine subscriptions to passing students inside the FAC. During the investigation, the subject denied attempting to sell magazines but was in fact attempting to collect money for St. Jude's Hospital. The officer did notice the subject had a 4” x 8” card hanging from his neck that identified him as a magazine solicitor. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-02-10, at 4:43 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Many of you will remember at the beginning of the Fall 09 semester there were unauthorized solicitors on campus. Many of these subjects were involved in con games or scams designed to look like legitimate business transactions. All of these scams are designed to separate you from your money. The University of Texas prohibits solicitation on campus unless prior approval is given. The University of Texas Police Department encourages you to report ALL Solicitation and aggressive salespersons. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found studying thru osmoses facedown with an open book, inside a restricted area after the library had closed. The subject presented the officer with a UT ID, but was not a currently registered student or staff member. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the building. Occurred on 02/03/10 at 2:24 AM. SAN JACINTO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Jacinto Blvd. Graffiti: Words and symbols written in red and black indelible marker were discovered in nine separate locations along the south wall of the garage. Estimated Damage: Unknown at this time. Discovered on: 2-02-10, at 8:15 AM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A UT police officer discovered the passenger side window of a green Ford Mustang broken out and the stereo system removed. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 02-01-10, 5:00 PM and 02-02-10, at 3:10 PM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave Burglary of Motor Vehicle: While investigating a prior Burglary of Motor Vehicle, the UT police officer was approached by a UT student reporting another vehicle had been broken into. During an inventory of the vehicle, the student informed the officer that her stereo system had been taken from her Nissan. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 1-31-10, at 10:00 PM and 2-02-10, at 3:10 PM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave Burglary of Motor Vehicle: While investigating the two prior burglaries, the officer located a third vehicle. During the investigation, the officer learned a GPS system had been removed from the vehicle. Loss value: $850.00. Occurred between: 2-01-10, at 2:00 AM and 2-02-10, at 3:10 PM. 1900 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Criminal Trespass Warning: Two non-UT subjects were reported hanging out underneath the Clark Field bridge. During the investigation, both subjects stated they were looking for a place to sleep. Both subjects were issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and escorted from the area. Occurred on: 2-02-10, at 10:54 AM. 2200 BLOCK GUADALUPE Driving While Intoxicated / Failure to Stop and Render Aid: A UT police officer observed a blue Honda traveling north on Guadalupe. The vehicle's right front tire (or lack thereof) drew the attention of the officer, along with the collision damage to the right front quarter panel. The vehicle's driver was having a difficult time traveling in the center of the traffic lane. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the non-UT driver's breath and noted her eyes were blood shot and glassy. As the officer was investigating the traffic violations, several witnesses and a victim arrived at the scene and informed the officer the victim had been hit by the suspect vehicle with collision damage. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed several clues that indicated she was intoxicated. The driver was taken into custody. Additional officers arrived at the scene to investigate the collision. At the conclusion of their investigation, additional charges were filed. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-02-10, at 1:20 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 alarm calls, 7 fire alarm activations, 1 suspicious activity report, 2 public assist requests and 3 unsecured door reports between 02/02/10 and 02/03/10.
