Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 02/12/10 and Monday, 02/15/10. ****Alert**** Please visit the below link to view an image of a subject who is responsible for two separate assaults against people near The University of Texas at Austin. The subject was taken into custody in regards to the below entry at 700 East Dean Keeton. http://www.utexas.edu/police/alerts/ SCAM ALERT Several UT students reported being approached by two non-UT subjects wanting to sell the students stereo equipment. Both subjects were wearing clothing that would allow for easy company / brand name recognition. The University of Texas prohibits companies or their employees from entering onto campus and solicit student, staff or facility without prior written approval. With the number of reports from students involving this scam over the weekend, pass this information along to your friends and co-workers. Post this information inside the dormitories to warn would-be buyer. When approached simply say No and walk away. The University of Texas Police Department would encourage you to notify us when you see solicitors. ALMETRIS DUREN HALL, 2624 Whitis Ave Suspicious Activity: A UT student reported he was approached by two subjects wearing Best Buy shirts. Both were asking the student if he was interested in purchasing a new Kinetic Home Theater stereo. After haggling the student walked away with the stereo. The student checked the stereo on-line and discovered it was not a brand sold by Best Buy, in fact the student discovered a scam involving this brand of speakers. The officers searched the area. The unknown subjects were described as: white male, blue best buy shirt and tan pants. Second subject: white male, brown shirt and blue jeans. Occurred on: 2-12-10, at 3:15 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This is a very common scam that has been run at UT over the past couple of decades. The student, being a shrewd business person, is taken in. The student sees their ability to purchase a high end stereo system at bargain basement prices. When in fact they are purchasing a low end stereo at high end prices. AT&T CONFERENCING CENTER, 1900 University Ave. Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was reported to have passed out on the north side of the building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The subject was unable to maintain his balance and staggered as he attempted to walk. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-14-10 at 8:37 PM. BRAZOS PARKING GARAGE, 200 East Martin Luther King Blvd. Criminal Mischief: A UT student discovered the front left tire of her vehicle had been cut with an unknown cutting tool. Loss value: $100.00. Discovered on: 2-12-10, at 7:08 PM. ENGINEERING TEACHING CENTER, 204 East Dean Keeton Suspicious Person: A non-UT subject was reported climbing on the metal artwork located on the west side of the building. During the investigation, the officers located the subject perched on top of the structure reading. The subject was given a verbal Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 2-13-10, at 4:30 PM. HARRY RANSOM CENTER, 300 West 21st Street Public Lewdness: A UT police officer observed two UT students engaged in activity that would have received a XXX movie rating on the west side of the building. Both subjects informed the officer they were unable to have any privacy inside their dorms and were looking for a quite place. Both subjects were taken into custody for Public Lewdness and were transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-13-10, at 2:57 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT student was discovered laying on the ground on the north side of the dormitory. As the officers approached the subject, the subject was smoking a cigarette. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The student did not know where he was. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. During a search of the subject, the officers located a 3-inch glass pipe that contained burned marijuana residue inside the bowl. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, additional charges for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia were filed. Occurred on: 2-14-10, at 3:15 AM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Assist Outside Agency: A UT student reported a subject was using his stolen UT ID to purchase a dinner at a local business inside Jester. During the investigation, the officers located the subject. During the investigation, the officers learned the subject had four outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrant for a number of traffic violations. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. Occurred on: 2-12-10, at 12:44 AM. PARKING LOT 104, 1900 North IH-35 Driving While Intoxicated / Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon: A UT police officer saw a white Ford truck parked in the middle of the parking lot with its headlamps on and the engine was running. The officer saw the driver was slumped over the driver's seat. During the investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver attempted to communicate with a mush mouthed dialect. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests. The non-UT driver displayed enough clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated. During an inventory of the subject's vehicle, the officers located a loaded 45 cal. Taurus under the driver's seat. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the driver was also charged with UCW and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-13-10, at 4:02 AM. TEXAS UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Assist Outside Agency / Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported to be yelling at several computers while hitting them. Several UT staff members told the subject he needed to leave the area. During the investigation, the officers discovered the subject had an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding outside agency arrest warrant and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning. Occurred on: 2-14-10, at 8:37 PM. TRINITY PARKING GARAGE, 1815 Trinity Ave. Suspicious Person: Two UT students observed a subject walking around on the fifth level of the parking garage. When the unknown subject saw the students approaching in their vehicle, the subject changed direction towards the elevator. Several minutes later, the students saw the same subject standing near the elevator and once again the subject changed direction when he saw the students. Both students read the Campus Watch and were aware of the numerous Burglary of Motor Vehicles and thought this subject's behavior was odd. The unknown subject was described as: black male, 20 years of age, and was last seen wearing a white sweat shirt and blue Dickies. Occurred on: 2-12-10, at 11:27 PM. 200 BLOCK JESTER CIRCLE DRIVE Leaving the Scene Collision: A UT staff member discovered the left rear bumper of her red Chevy had been struck, causing damage to the bumper. The striking vehicle left the scene. Estimated Damage: $500.00. Discovered on: 2-13-10, at 4:25 PM. 600 BLOCK COLORADO Public Intoxication: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject was laying on the ground in a puddle of urine. During the investigation, the officers learned the subject was in town with his wife celebrating his birthday, anniversary and Valentine's Day. The subject stated he was upset when he saw his wife kissing another male inside a bar. The officers were able to contact the subject's wife and she refused to take care or custody of her husband. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-14-10, at 3:19 AM. 600 BLOCK COLORADO Public Intoxication: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject was seen staggering and stumbling while trying to cross a very busy street. The staff member went on to report the non-UT after crossing the street, proceeded to relieve herself on the sidewalk. During the investigation, the officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The subject informed the officers that she did not have her ID on her, but was found to be in possession of several other IDs that were issued to other people. The non-UT subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-12-10, at 2:30 AM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Driving While Intoxicated: A brown colored Nissan was stopped after committing a traffic violation. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. The driver explained he was coming from a friend's house and was on his way home. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests to the driver. The driver displayed a number of clues that indicated he was intoxicated. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-14-10, at 2:15 AM. 2600 BLOCK GUADALUPE Suspicious Activity: A UT police officer observed a non-UT subject selling stereo equipment out of the back of his vehicle. During the investigation, the buyer quickly changed his mind when the police officers stopped to further investigate. The officers located a second vehicle involved in the selling of stereo equipment. Both subjects stated who they worked for and were issued written Criminal Trespass Warnings for the campus. The suspect vehicles were described as: Tan colored Honda and a black SUV. Occurred on: 2-12-10, at 4:00 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: This was the second report received by our department of subjects attempting to solicit the sell of stereo equipment from the back of a vehicle. In years past buyers have gotten back to their dorm rooms only to find out the cheaply priced stereo was in fact a very cheap stereo. Pass the word around to your friends and co-workers. Be aware of what you are buying and who is trying to sell it. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 37 alarm calls, 1 fire alarm activation, 5 public assist requests, 1 motor vehicle collision, 3 suspicious activity reports, 4 medical emergency assists and 5 unsecured door reports between 02/12/10 and 02/15/10.
