JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A grey Giant mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the dormitory after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between: 2-12-10 and 2-15-10. Crime Prevention Tip: Bicycles are one of the top five items most likely to be stolen on the campus of the University of Texas. With that being said, lets make bicycles one of the hardest items to get “jacked.” The recommended method for securing your property at UT is a two-lock locking system. The first lock, or your primary lock is a U-shaped lock that uses a flat key to secure it. There are a number of locks on the market and the thieves have their favorite. They like the U-locks that utilize a round key. These types of locks are easily defeated with a ball point pen. Your secondary lock is a thick self-locking cable lock. This lock is used to secure your rear tire to the bike frame. Not the bike frame to the bike rack. Again thieves have their favorites with these locks as well. For a thief, the thinner the lock the better. MUSIC RECITAL HALL, 2405 Trinity Theft: A red and black colored Vortex bicycle was reported stolen after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had not taken the time to register his property with Parking and Transportation nor had he recorded the bicycle's serial number. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 2-15-10, between 11:00 AM and 12:50 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: As you can see it is important to take a few minutes and register your bike with Parking and Transportation as well as recording the serial number of your bike. Many of these unregistered stolen bike fall into a vortex and are never recovered. PAINTER HALL, 103 West 24th Street Harassment: A UT student reported another UT student has been sending her harassing emails, text messages, and making daily telephone calls since they ended their relationship over a year ago. During the investigation, the officer learned the suspect had also been stalking the victim by showing up at her classes and place of work. Occurred since: 12-08 to 2-14-10. Crime Prevention Tip: This is a hard case for someone to endure, especially for this amount of time. There are several things a person can do when they believe they are being harassed. Early reporting to the police begins the documentation of the incident(s). This can lead to a number of criminal charges, up to and including Stalking. But the most important part is personal safety. Develop a safety plan. This plan includes taking a Women's Self Defense class and contacting the UT Counseling Center. For more information contact the UT Police Crime Prevention Unit. 700 BLOCK EAST CLYDE LITTLEFIELD Disturbance / Assist Outside Agency: A UT staff member reported two non-UT subjects were involved in a disturbance in Parking Lot 37. The subjects were exiting the parking lot as officers arrived at the scene. During the investigation, officers learned the subjects had been involved in an argument, causing the non-UT female to become very upset. As the investigation continued, officers soon discovered the non-UT male had several outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants. The subject was taken into custody for the outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 2-15-10, at 9:07 AM. 2500 BLOCK WHITIS AVE.
