When the staff member challenged the caller's story, his told the staff member there was a mix-up in the paper work and needed the printer's model number instead. When the staff member informed the caller that she was going to transfer his call to another staff member he hung up on the staff member. During the investigation, the officer learned the staff member had successfully trapped the caller's telephone number using *57. Occurred on: 2-17-10, at 10:25 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Kudos to this staff member and her co-workers for detecting a scam as it was unfolding. The staff member did not give the caller the requested information, but asked questions as to why he wanted the information. It is very clear the caller was not prepared when he encountered an astute and aware staff member. Additional congrats to the other staff members that were aware of the *57 feature. This is a free service on all campus phones and is very simple to use. After you hang up and the call has ended, pick up the telephone and enter *57.
