Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 02/19/10 and Monday, 02/20/10. CHEMICAL AND PETROLEUM ENGINEERING, 200 East Dean Keeton Criminal Trespass: A staff member reported seeing a non-UT subject exiting the building after the building was closed to the public. The responding officer then observed the same subject exiting the Ernest Cockrell Jr. building. The subject was found to have previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning and was subsequently taken into custody. Occurred on 02/19/10 at 10:00 PM. COLLEGE OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, 2110 Speedway Theft: A Dell Latitude D610 laptop computer was stolen when it was left in a 5th floor classroom. Loss value: $550.00. Occurred on 02/19/10 between 11:00 AM and 12:30 PM. FRANK C ERWIN SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER, 1701 Red River Theft / Credit Card Abuse: A non-UT subject reported she discovered her credit card missing after she made a purchase a concession stand located on the arena level. After discovering the card had been taken, the reporting person found two unauthorized purchases had been made using her card. One of the purchases was at a local store and the other was at an on-line store. Reported on 02/21/10 at 6:30 PM. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Public Intoxication: While investigating an alarm, UT Police Officers observed a UT student, who was under the age of 21, that was having difficulty walking as he was moving rather slowly and in a staggering fashion. The student had evidence on his clothing that he lost his battle with gravity at least once already. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed a danger to himself. Occurred on 02/19/10 at 3:45 AM. JESTER CENTER ACADEMIC, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: An ill UT student, who was under the age of 21, was found by the entrance to a restaurant located on the west side of the building. The student had come from a party located at a nearby multi-residency home where she had consumed large amounts of alcohol. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport her to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 02/20/10 at 12:57 AM. JESTER CENTER EAST, 203 East 21st Street Criminal Mischief: On two different occasions, an unknown subject(s) turned a fire suppression control valve to the off position. The valve is located on the 2nd floor of the southwest stairwell. Cost for having the valve checked and turned back on: $157.50. Occurred on 02/19/10 at 12:55 AM and on 02/20/10 at 2:52 AM. Safety Tip: Sadly, we do need to tell everyone to not play with or alter the fire suppression system. Such systems are in place for the safety of all. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication / Minor in Possession: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was reported as being “passed out in a chair” located in a 2nd floor hallway. When the student was awakened, he was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself. The student was also found to have a total of five cans of beer concealed about his person. Occurred on 02/19/10 at 1:47 AM. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: Two UT students found an unconscious UT student in the 300 block of West 21st Street. The students carried the unconscious student to the Jester Lobby to seek help from Housing and Food Staff. When the unconscious student came to, he displayed an extreme involuntary physical reaction to the over-consumption of alcohol. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport him to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 02/19/10 at 3:12 AM. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Suspicious Activity: A UT student reported seeing a subject loitering by the bicycle racks located near the Jester Center Sports Court. The subject would watch pedestrians as they passed by. When there was no one around, the subject grabbed a red bicycle and pulled until it came free from the racks. The subject rode the bicycle towards Clark Field. The student was not able to call the police department quickly as he did not know the telephone number for the police dispatcher. Occurred on 02/21/10 at 12:16 PM Crime Prevention Tip: In this case, the student could have called the police department early enough to allow the patrol officers to locate this subject and determine if the bicycle belonged to the subject. Sadly, the student did not know or have quick access to the UTPD Police Department Dispatcher. This is why we encourage everyone to program the UTPD Dispatcher telephone number into their cell phone. If you don't know it – here it is…512-471-4441. You can also call 9-1-1. Using either number, be prepared to give the dispatcher your location and the nature of the call. Encourage your friends to do the same. Remember, if you report suspicious or criminal activity to UTPD and your report leads to us catching a thief, we will buy you a pizza. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Theft: A red Mongoose bicycle was stolen when it was “secured” with a chain lock to a street sign pole locate don't he west side of the dormitory. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred on 02/19/10 between 12 noon and 3:00 PM. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Minor in Possession of Alcohol: While investigating the report of the smell of marijuana coming from a 9th floor room, UT Police Officers discovered the two residents of the room, who were both under the age of 21, were in possession of 11 cans of beer, 3 bottles of beer, 1 bottle of malt liquor and 1 bottle of champagne. While there was no evidence remaining of the possession of marijuana, one of the two students did have physical signs of having smoked marijuana. Occurred on 02/21/10 at 1:45 AM KINSOLVING DORMITORY, 2605 Whitis Theft: A grey camera case containing a Canon Powershot SX10 was stolen from a 4th floor dormitory room. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred between 02/05/10 and 02/07/10. L. THEO BELLMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Theft: A blue and white GTB Avalan 2 DS D5 bicycle was stolen while it was “secured” with a cable lock to the bicycle rack located on the west side of the building. $400.00. Occurred on 02/19/10 between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: Look at the time frame for this theft – an hour during daylight hours. Crimes can happen at any time of day or night and on any day of the week. In this case, there should have been several people who could have or should have witnessed this theft. Please pay attention to your surroundings, if you see something that seems suspicious to you, then it probably is suspicious. If you see suspicious activity; don't hesitate, call the police department immediately. MIKE A.MYERS TRACK & SOCCER STADIUM, 707 Clyde Littlefield Burglary / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Criminal Trespass: UT officers observed a non-UT subject exiting a concession stand located inside the closed stadium. The subject was found to be in possession of a thermometer that is believed to have come from the concessions stand. A check of the concession stand showed several other items placed next to a pull cart. The subject was also found to be in possession of a small glass pipe containing burned cocaine residue. Occurred on 02/20/10 at 2:50 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Graffiti: A blue pen was used to write words on a sign located by the main entrance to the building. Repair cost: $20.00. Reported on 02/20/10 at 6:04 AM. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Trespass / Criminal Trespass Warning (4 counts): Five non-UT subjects were reported as loitering in the southeast stairwell. The subjects were stopped and identified. One of the five subjects was found to have previously been issued a written criminal trespass warning. That subject was taken into custody for criminal trespass. The other four subjects were each issued a written criminal trespass warning citation. Occurred on 02/19/10 at 10:12 AM. SAN ANTONIO GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Trespass Warning (4 Counts): Four non-UT subjects were reported as loitering by the northwest stairwell of the garage. All four subjects were issued written criminal trespass warnings. Occurred on 02/18/10 at 11:50 AM SOUTH MALL, 200 West 21st Street Criminal Mischief: An unknown subject(s) used chalk to write words on the sidewalk located on the southwest side of the South Mall. Removal Cost: $20.00. Discovered on 02/22/10 at 12:31 AM. 600 East Clyde Littlefield Drive Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol By a Minor / Open Container in a Vehicle: A non-UT subject, who was under the age of 21, was stopped for speeding. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, but not to the point he was deemed to be driving while intoxicated. An open bottle of whiskey was found inside the vehicle. Occurred on 02/21/10 at 5:08 AM. 2200 Guadalupe Public Intoxication / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was found yelling profanities at passing pedestrians. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself and others. The subject was also found to have three outstanding outside agency arrest warrants for…you guessed it; alcohol related offenses. Occurred on 02/21/10 at 12:45 AM. 3200 Guadalupe Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject flagged down an officer and stated he believed there might be a warrant out for his arrest. The subject was insistent that the officer check for the warrant; so the officer did – the subject was right. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for an alcohol violation. Occurred on 02/20/10 at 5:15 PM. 600 Lavaca Disorderly Conduct - Fighting in Public (five counts): While two non-UT subjects were attempting to cross the street, a vehicle, occupied by three other non-UT subjects passed by them. The two pedestrians began to yell at the occupants of the vehicle. The occupants then exited the vehicle and confronted the two pedestrians which soon turned into a mêlée. None of the five subjects wished to file charges or were injured. Occurred on 02/20/10 at 2:00 AM. 700 Lavaca Public Intoxication / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject was reported as nearly being struck by two vehicles. A UT Guard Officer needed to pull the subject away from the street to prevent her from being struck by one of the vehicles. The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point she was deemed to be a danger to herself and to passing motorists. The subject was also found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for failing to appear on a pedestrian crossing against the light charge. Occurred on 02/20/10 at 1:43 AM. 700 Lavaca Public Intoxication: A local cab driver flagged down a UT Police Officer to report an unconscious patron in the back of his cab. The non-UT patron of the cab was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport her to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 02/20/10 at 1:57 AM. 2300 San Jacinto Driving While Intoxicated / Possession of a Controlled Substance / Possession of Marijuana / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Assist Outside Agency: A UT student was stopped for disregarding a stop sign and speeding while driving a white Lincoln pick-up truck. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to have been driving while intoxicated. The student was also found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor. A plastic bag containing .696 ounces of marijuana was found inside the truck. A cylinder containing 9.49 grams of mushrooms were also found inside the truck. Occurred on 02/19/10 at 3:00 AM. 2300 San Jacinto Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was found passed out on a bus stop bench. When awakened, the subject had a difficult time recalling his own identity as he stated his name was “Austin, Texas.” With the punctuation of the report, I guess that would make his first name “Texas” and last name “Austin.” The subject was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point he was deemed to be a danger to himself. Occurred on 02/21/10 at 4:00 AM. 1900 University Assist Outside Agency / Possession of Marijuana: A non-UT subject was stopped for several traffic violations while driving a Jeep Liberty. The subject was found to have an outstanding outside agency arrest warrant. The subject was also found to be in possession of a hand rolled cigar containing marijuana. Occurred on 02/21/10 at 12 midnight. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 46 Alarm Calls, 1 Fire Alarm, 7 “Police Help Call Box Activations, 7 Public Assist Requests, 1 Found Property, 4 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Suspicious Odor Report, 1 Suspicious Substance Report, 1 Accidental Damage Report, 1 Malfunctioning Light Report, 2 Welfare Concern Reports, 2 Medical Emergency Assists and 9 Unsecured Door Reports between 02/19/10 and 02/22/10. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need.
