Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 02/24/10 and Thursday, 02/25/10. GREGORY GYMNASIUM, 2101 Speedway Theft / Credit Card Abuse: A wallet containing various identification cards and credit cards was stolen when it was left on the bleachers located by the 2nd floor basketball courts while the owner played basketball. Before the report of the theft was made, the owner discovered two unauthorized charges had been made on his credit card. Loss value: $5.00. Occurred on 02/12/10 between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Reported on 02/24/10 at 12 noon. Crime Prevention Tip: Please take note of the time of the theft and the time the theft was reported to the police department. If you discover you are the victim of any crime, do not hesitate to contact the police department. It is important for the police department to know about the crimes in its jurisdiction for several reasons. First, the police have no opportunity to solve the crime if they never know about it. Secondly, knowing the full extent of criminal activity helps the police department allocate resources. Finally, often times patrol officers will provide the victims of crime with valuable prevention tips. In this case, the officer very well may have recommended the victim cancel the credit cards as soon as possible. JACKSON GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES BUILDING, #10 East Mall Burglary of a Coin Operated Machine: An unknown object was used to break a hole in the front glass of a food dispensing vending machine located in a basement level hallway. There was also damage to the dollar bill intake device. At the time of the report, it was unknown if any product or money was stolen from the machine. Repair cost: $100.00. Occurred between 02/23/10 at 7:05 PM and 02/24/10 at 8:10 AM. JESTER CENTER WEST, 201 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT student, who was under the age of 21, was reported as being “passed out” in front of the main entry doors to the dormitory. The student, was awakened, but was unable to speak clearly or stand. The student was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage to the point Austin-Travis County EMS needed to transport him to a local hospital for the treatment of alcohol poisoning. Occurred on 02/25/10 at 5:04 AM. L. THEO BELLMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Theft / Criminal Trespass Warning: An employee of the Longhorn Limited Store located on the west side of the building reported seeing a non-UT subject stuffing clothing items down the front of his pants. The responding officers stopped the subject after he exited the store. The subject initially denied having stolen any items. After a few questions, the subject realized the futility of his story and said “[Explicative]; you are going to catch me anyway!” and pulled three shirts out of his pants and threw them down. In addition to other law enforcement action taken, the subject was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 02/24/10 at approximately 1:30 PM. MUSIC BUILDING & RECITAL HALL, 2406 Robert Dedman Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was reported as sleeping on a 3rd floor sofa. The subject was awakened and issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 02/25/10 at 1:04 AM. TOWNES HALL, 727 East Dean Keeton Burglary of a Coin Operated Machine: The door to a feminine hygiene dispensing machine located inside a 2nd floor women's restroom was pried open. At the time of the report it was unknown if any product or cash was stolen from the machine. Repair cost: $50.00. Occurred between 2/23/10 at 2:00 AM and 02/24/10 at 10 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 23 Alarm Calls, 2 Fire Alarm Calls, 1 “Police Help” Call Box Activation, 1 Suspicious Odor Report, 1 Motor Vehicle Collision, 2 Public Assist Requests and 3 Suspicious Activity Reports between 02/24/10 and 02/25/10. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that covers assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license. BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community.
