Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Monday, 03/01/10, and Tuesday, 03/02/10. FRANK ERWIN CENTER, 1701 Red River Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member observed a subject wearing a t-shirt he found to be offensive and profane. The staff member asked the subject to turn his shirt inside out if he intended to remain at the event. The subject complied with the request, as he walked away, the subject turned his shirt right side out. During the investigation, the officers detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the breath. The officers determined the non-UT subject was under the legal age of 21 and had been consuming alcohol prior to the basketball game. The subject will be issued a summons for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 3-1-10, at 9:34 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A UT staff member reported the odor of burning marijuana coming from a 10th floor dormitory room. During the investigation, the officers discovered a glass pipe and pipe case sitting out in plain view emitting the odor of burned marijuana. The officers confiscated the drug paraphernalia and issued the owner a field release citation for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Occurred on: 3-01-10, at 8:11 PM. UNION BUILDING, #4 West Mall Public Intoxication: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject was having difficulty walking and maintaining his balance. The officer located the subject and detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath. The subject informed the officer that he was heading home to watch the Olympics and became adamant that he did not want to miss the closing ceremonies and needed to leave. The officer assisted the subject in leaving by taking the subject into custody for Public Intoxication then transported him to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-01-10, at 5:14 PM. FYI: there are televisions at Central Booking, but the Olympics were over with two days ago. 200 BLOCK WEST 6th STREET Reckless Driving / Duty Upon Striking a Fixture: Two UT staff members reported a black Ford truck had peeled out spinning its tires, then running a red light while “fishtailing. The driver lost control of the vehicle and “spun-out” doing a complete 360 before coming to a complete stop after striking a tree. The driver then drove away and again lost control of the vehicle after accelerating. The driver parked the vehicle a block away and simply walked away. One of the staff members was able to stop the passenger until the police officers arrived. While the officers were investigating the collision and reckless driving, a witness saw the driver peeking around the corner looking at the officers. After a short chase the non-UT driver was taken into custody for Reckless Driving and Leaving the Scene of a Collision. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-01-10, at 12:14 AM. 200 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Driving While Intoxicated / Assist Outside Agency: A UT student was reported attempting to get into several vehicles that were not his. Officers located a subject sitting inside a Mazda. The subject's head was down and he was obviously asleep with the engine of the vehicle running. After being awakened, the driver, a UT student, handed the officer a credit card instead of his driver's license. The officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted the subject was swaying to and fro as he attempted to stand next to his vehicle. The subject admitted he had consumed several mixed drinks, but had eaten some food at the same time. The officer administered the Standardized Field Sobriety tests and the subject displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicate. The subject was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booking. In addition to the law enforcement action taken, the officers learned the subject had several outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants for Speeding. Occurred on: 3-01-10, at 3:44 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 22 Alarm Calls, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 0 unsecured door reports, and 2 EMS calls between 03/01/10 and 3/02/10.
