Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 03/19/10 and Monday, 03/22/10. AT&T CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Ave Criminal Trespass: A UT staff member discovered a non-UT subject sleeping inside a 2nd level men's restroom. During the investigation, the officers located the subject sleeping inside the handicap accessible stall. The officers learned the subject had a prior Criminal Trespass Warning and was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 3-20-10, at 10:51 PM. AT&T CONFERENCE CENTER, 1900 University Ave Criminal Trespass Warning / Theft: A UT staff member witnessed a non-UT subject approach several subjects and ask them for money. After being denied any change, the subject removed a bagel before leaving the building. The subject was located a short distance away and was detained. During the investigation, the subject denied taking any food, but admitted he had been asking for money. The subject was issued a Criminal Trespass Warning after the victim declined to file criminal charges. Occurred on: 3-19-10, at 10:00 AM. HOMER RAINEY HALL, 200 West 21st Street Criminal Mischief: UT Police Officers and members of the Austin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm inside HRH. During the investigation, the Police Officers and Fire Fighters discovered an unknown subject had discharged a fire extinguisher inside a third floor men's restroom. It was a Motley Crue, but the officers, found no one had been smoking in the boy's room. Loss value: Unknown at this time. Occurred on: 3-21-10, at 5:07 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: Last day of Spring Break? Re-living Junior High? Whatever the reason, discharging a fire extinguisher puts lives and property at risk. Not one of your finer moments. JESTER EAST DORMITORY, 203 East 21st Street Public Intoxication: A UT staff member reported a UT student was passed out in the hall on the 10th floor. During the investigation, the officers located a subject sprawled out in a large pool of bodily fluids and gastric juices. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject and were able to communicate using their training and experence. The subject stated she had been drinking outside of St. Louis MO. With the transporting elixir, the subject now believed she was on the 4th floor of her dormitory. Austin EMS treated the subject for alcohol poisoning at the scene and in fact physically transported her to a local area hospital for additional treatment. Charges for Public Intoxication are pending. Occurred on: 3-21-10, at 5:49 AM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported the theft of his textbook after it was left unattended on top of a study carrel located on the 4th floor. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 3-21-10, between 2:30 Pm and 3:00 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student discovered two textbooks had been removed from a secured locker located on the third floor. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between 3-11-10 and 3-21-10. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student discovered two textbooks and a black backpack had been removed from inside a secured locker located on the 5th floor. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred between: 3-19-10, and 3-21-10. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported the theft of his textbook. During the investigation, the officer learned the textbook had been left unattended while the student went to the restroom located on another floor. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 3-21-10, between 2:30 PM and 2:50 PM. Crime Prevention Tip: It is very likely the thief is casing each of his victims and simply sitting nearby waiting to make the grab. W.C. HOGG BUILDING, #2 East Mall Theft: A blue Trek mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the east side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $250.00. Occurred between 3-10-10 and 3-21-10. 600 BLOCK PARK PLACE Driving While intoxicated: A Toyota SUV was seen travelling at a high rate of speed while committing several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the driver's breath and noted the driver's eyes were glassy. The driver informed the officer that his wife had called and wanted him home that was his only emergency. The officer began administering the Standardized Field Sobriety tests when the non-UT driver asked the officer if his intentions were to take him to jail. The officer explained his intentions, and the driver stated he did not want to look stupid. The driver displayed several clues that indicated he was intoxicated and was unable to complete the tests. The subject sat down and informed the officers that he was calling his attorney. The subject was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated and was transported to Central Booking. I am sure the professional staff at Central Booking afforded him the opportunity to complete his desired telephone call. Occurred on: 3-21-10, at 1:45 AM. PARKING LOT 111, 2200 Salina Burglary of Motor Vehicle: A non-UT subject discovered the front passenger's side window of his green Honda had been broken out and a Garmin 230 GPS system had been stolen. Loss value: $200.00. Occurred on: 3-20-10 between 1:30 PM and 5:30 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 47 Alarm Calls, 4 “Police Help” Call Box Activation, 1 Fire Alarm Activation, 4 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 Suspicious Person Reports, 8 Unsecure Door Reports, and 2 Public Assist Requests between 03/19/10 and 03/22/10.
