Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Tuesday, 03/23/10 and Wednesday, 03/24/10. * * * * * ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGE From APD* * * * * Auto Thieves Targeting Fitness Center Parking Lots In the last few weeks, Austin Police Department Auto Theft Interdiction detectives have seen a rise of auto thefts in fitness center parking lots throughout Austin. Victims are placing personal items such as car keys and purses in their lockers and are leaving the lockers unlocked while working out. Thieves are then stealing these items from the unlocked lockers and stealing vehicles parked in the fitness center parking lots. It only takes seconds for a thief to steal your car and your identity. Most of these crimes could have been prevented if drivers would take the few extra moments to lock their belongings, lock their vehicles and take their keys. BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING BUILDING, 107 West Dean Keeton Theft: A black Specialized mountain bicycle was reported stolen from the bike racks located on the south side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $320.00. Occurred on: 3-23-10, between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: A blue LG slide telephone and a cork wallet containing $4.00 in cash, several credit cards and personal identification were stolen after being left unattended inside the second floor weight room. Loss value: $215.00. Occurred on: 3-23-10 between 10:00 PM and 11:00 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: An Apple iPhone along with a tan leather wallet containing $10.00 in cash, debit credit card and personal identification were stolen after being left unattended while the owner was playing basketball. During the investigation, the officer learned there were two unidentified subjects seen “hanging out” in the area prior to the theft. The unidentified subjects were described as: black male, 6'-4”, 190 lbs., short cropped hair, last seen wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt, and a black ball cap. The second subject, black male, 5'-10”, 150 lbs., short cropped hair, dark colored t-shirt, and blue jeans. Loss value: $416.00. Occurred on: 3-23-10, between 9:45 PM and 10:45 PM. GREGORY GYM, 2101 Speedway Theft: An Apple iPhone was reported stolen while the owner played basketball. Loss value: $650.00. Occurred on: 3-23-10, between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported her textbook was stolen from her secured locker located on the 3rd floor. During the investigation, the victim stated she had seen two unknown subjects banging and tapping on lockers. She described the subjects as: 1st subject, white male, mid to late 20's, tattoo on upper left arm. 2nd subject, white male mid 20's. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between: 3-19-10 and 3-23-10. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student discovered her textbook had been stolen from inside a secured locker located on the 4th floor. The victim stated she had received an email from PCL asking her to check on her property due to the high number of thefts occurring inside the library. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred between: 3-10-10 and 3-23-10. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student reported a textbook and a UT umbrella were stolen from a secured locker located on the 3rd floor. Loss value: $20.00. Occurred between: 3-12-10 and 3-22-10. PERRY-CASTANEDA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A UT student discovered four textbooks were stolen from a secured locker located on the 4th floor. Loss value: $400.00. Occurred between: 3-16-10 and 3-23-10. SAN JACINTO RESIDENCE HALL, 309 East 21st Street Theft: A grey Trek mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. During the investigation, the officer learned the victim had located his undamaged U-lock next to the rack. Loss value: $300.00. Occurred between: 3-11-10, and 3-22-10. UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 1616 Guadalupe Criminal Mischief: A UT Police Officer discovered a round light fixture located on the northeast portion of the building had been broken. Loss value: $50.00. Discovered on: 3-23-10, at 8:29 AM. WEST PICKLE CAMPUS, 3925 West Braker Theft: A green 1999 Ford 350 truck along with 6 bags of decomposed granite, Apple iPhone, and a checkbook were reported stolen from the parking lot located on the east side of the property. Loss value: $12,320. Occurred on: 3-23-10, between 1:30 PM and 3:30 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 13 Alarm Calls, 4 “Police Help” Call Box Activations, 3 Suspicious Activity Reports, 2 EMS calls, 1 Welfare call, and 4 Unsecure Door Reports between 03/23/10 and 03/24/10.
