Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 04/14/10 and Thursday, 04/15/10. Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks. ADMINSTRATIVE MESSAGE The University of Texas at Austin Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment as part of a program to maintain its accreditation status. ARNO NOWOTNY BUILDING, 709 East Martin Luther King Criminal Mischief: An unknown person set fire to discarded soda pop cans in the cement enclosed recycling bin located just north of the building. The fire was small enough that it apparently self-extinguished. There was slight smoke damage to the cement wall. Repair cost: $50.00. Reported on 04/14/10 at 5:21 PM. BELMONT HALL, 2109 San Jacinto Theft: A black iPhone was reported stolen from a 5th floor gym after being left inside an unsecured backpack. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 4-14-10, between 8:15 PM and 9:00 PM. DEVELOPMENT BUILDING, 2901 North IH35 Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was discovered sleeping in the bike racks located on the south side of the building. During the investigation, the subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 4-15-10, at 2:15 AM. JACKSON SCHOOL OF GEOLOGY, #10 East Mall Theft: A yellow Giant XTC mountain bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the west side of the building. During the investigation, the officer learned the subject's bike lock was still attached to the bike rack. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 4-14-10, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Trespass: A UT Police Officer observed a known offender standing under the covered parking lot located at Walter Webb Hall. The subject was seen walking towards an unknown female on the north side of the garage. The officer saw the female reaching into her purse to retrieve some money. When the subject saw the undercover police officer, he asked the officer if he could assist him with jump starting his vehicle. The subject was a little taken back when the officer introduced himself as a police officer. The subject was taken into custody for Criminal Trespass and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 4-14-10, at 7:30 AM. Scam Alert: This is a common scam on and around the campus. A subject will approach a person and claim his vehicle is broken down or that it has been towed. The subject will then ask the person for money. In some cases, the subject will ask for a ride to his vehicle and then get into the person's car. In addition to asking for the money, the subject will also con a free ride. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Criminal Trespass Warning: A non-UT subject was found sleeping in a sleeping bag located under the northwest stairwell. When the subject was awakened, he was issued a written criminal trespass warning. Occurred on 04/15/10 at 6:40 AM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 23 Alarm Calls, 1 “Police Help” Call Box Activation, 2 Public Assist Requests, 1 Medical Emergency Assist, 1 Light Malfunction, 1 Suspicious Activity Report, 1 Welfare Concern Report, 2 Stuck Elevator Calls and 10 Unsecured Door Reports between 04/14/10 and 04/15/10. The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. RAD Program For Women, Now Available (Classes are FREE) Advanced RAD Classes Being Held for RAD Class Graduates The RAD program is a 16-hour course of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women that covers assault prevention and risk reduction while progressing on to basic hands-on defense training. http://www.utexas.edu/police/rad/ Defensive Driving: Learn Defensive Driving from a UTPD Police Officer. UTPD generally schedules a Defensive Driving Class approximately once a month – based on need. The classes meet in the University Police Building, Room 1.318, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr (east of Memorial Stadium). The cost for the course is $25.00 (check or cash) payable on class date. If paying in cash, please bring the exact amount because change may not be available. You will also need to bring your driver's license.
