Report for 04/29/2010

Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Wednesday, 04/28/10 and Thursday, 04/29/10. Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks. For more information on BCAL, visit the BCAL Web site at www.utexas.edu/safety/bcal or call 512-232-5050. F.L. WINSHIP DRAMA BUILDING, 300 East 23rd Street Theft: A purple colored Giant bicycle was stolen while it was secured with a cable lock to a bicycle rack located on the south side of the building. Loss value: $350.00. Occurred between 04/27/10 at 12 noon and 04/28/10 at 4:00 PM. JESTER ACADEMIC CENTER, 201 East 21st Street GRAFFITI: A black paint pen was used to write letters and words on a bathroom stall wall located inside a 1st floor men's restroom. Repair cost: $25.00. Occurred between 04/27/10 at 8:00 AM and 04/28/10 at 10:39 AM. PRATHER HALL DORMITORY, 305 East 21st Street Theft: The rear tire and rim to a Cannondale bicycle were stolen while the front tire and bicycle frame were secured to the bicycle racks located on the west side of the dormitory. Loss value: $100.00. Occurred between 04/27/10 at 7:00 PM and 04/28/20 at 9:00 AM. Crime Prevention Tip: For long time readers of the Campus Watch, I am confident most of you have read our recommendation to use both a cable lock and a u-lock to secure your bicycle to a bicycle rack. For the most part, we advertise this valuable crime prevention tip as a thief must use two different tools to defeat both locks – one is a cutting tool and the other is a prying tool. The use of two locks also deters the lazier thief who will need to invest more time and effort to defeat both locks. There is another reason to use both types of locks. This case illustrates this well. The u-lock should be used to secure the front wheel and bike frame to the bicycle rack. The cable lock should be used to secure the rear wheel and bike frame to the bicycle rack. In this case, the person who now has a unicycle is more than likely one of two victims. I venture to say someone else in the nearby area has had their front wheel and bike frame stolen. 200 East Jester Circle Possession of Marijuana: A UT student was found sitting in an area that is, well, best described as “off the beaten path.” A lit hand rolled marijuana cigarette was found on the ground next to the sitting student. Occurred on 04/28/10 at 8:30 PM. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 18 Alarm Calls, 1 Medical Emergency Assist, 2 Suspicious Activity Reports, 1 Trashcan Fire and 4 Unsecured Door Reports between 04/28/10 and 04/29/10. The University employs a wide variety of tools to make sure everyone on campus is informed during an emergency event—including text messaging. In order to accomplish emergency text messaging more effectively, the University is collecting cell phone numbers from members of our campus community. Effective August 26, 2009, this database of cell phone numbers will be used for emergency text messages. Please complete the form at http://www.utexas.edu/cellphonealert so you will become an integral part of this important emergency notification system and help the university to achieve the highest standards of campus and community safety.
