Campus Watch: Below is a summary of campus activity reported to or observed by the University Police Department patrol officers between Friday, 04/30/10 and Monday, 05/03/10. Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) The Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) is a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). BCAL provides a central resource for UT faculty, students, and staff who may have concerns about the behavior or well-being of another member of the campus community. By calling BCAL at 512-232-5050, callers may talk with trained staff members who will assist the caller in exploring available options and strategies as well as referrals to appropriate campus support networks. BIO-MEDICAL ENGINEERING BUILDING, 107 West Dean Keeton Suspicious Activity: A UT student reported receiving several emails that were concerning in nature, as well as in tone, from another UT student. Occurred on: 4-30-10, at 9:02 PM. JESTER WEST DORMITORY, 201 East 21st Street Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT staff member reported seeing a UT student being removed from a vehicle, then the student began vomiting at the feet of her friends. During the investigation, officers noted the subject was under the legal age of 21. The subject was issued a field release citation for Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor and was released to a sober friend. Occurred on: 5-02-01, at 2:11 AM. PARKING LOT 108, 1500 Block Red River Criminal Mischief: A non-UT subject reported an unknown subject had thrown a rock through the right rear passenger window of his Toyota van. During the investigation the vehicle was inventoried and no personal property was discovered missing. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 5-01-10, between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM. PERRY-CASTENADA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT staff member reported a non-UT subject was sleeping near the south side of PCL. During the investigation, the subject informed the officers that he was waiting for the library to open at 7:00 AM. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from the area. Occurred on: 5-03-10, at 6:05 AM. PERRY-CASTENADA LIBRARY, 101 East 21st Street Theft: A black Samsung cellular telephone was reported stolen after being left unattended on top of a toilet paper dispenser located inside a 3rd floor women's restroom. Loss value: $150.00. Occurred on: 5-02-10, between 7:30 PM and 7:45 PM. SAN ANTONIO PARKING GARAGE, 2420 San Antonio Assault / Assist Outside Agency: A non-UT subject reported being assaulted by two non-UT subjects who had left the area. While investigating the assault one of the suspects was seen walking near the area. The suspect was detained. The officers learned the assault was a result of an earlier conflict involving the victim. The suspect was taken into custody and was transported to Central Booing. Occurred on: 5-02-10, at 1:18 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST 21st STREET Public Intoxication / Possession of Marijuana: A UT student discovered an unresponsive non-UT subject passed out near Waller Creek. The officers detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject as they approached him. The officers were able to wake the subject and noted the subject was disoriented and was not able to control his balance as he attempted to stand and walk. The subject informed the officers that he had been drinking a lot, then responded to all other questions with his name and date of birth. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication. During a search, the officers located a clear plastic baggie that contained a green leafy substance that later tested positive as marijuana. The subject was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 05-03-10, at 12:35 AM. 300 BLOCK EAST 23rd STREET Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor: A UT Police Officer observed the driver of a Kawasaki motorcycle commit several traffic violations. During the traffic investigation, the officer detected a moderate odor of alcohol on the driver's breath. At first the UT student denied having consumed any alcohol, but later stated he had drank 4 Cranberry and Vodka drinks and he was willing to do the Field Sobriety tests for the officer. The officer administered the Field Sobriety tests and did not observe enough clues that indicated the driver was intoxicated. The officer learned the subject was under the legal age of 21 and issued the driver a field release citation for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol by a Minor. Occurred on: 5-02-10, at 4:20 AM. 600 BLOCK COLORADO Public Intoxication: A non-UT subject was observed staggering and swaying heavily back and forth. The subject tripped and narrowly missed falling off a 3 foot raise. In order to maintain his up-right posture, the subject utilized several well placed walls and a guard shack to keep from further falls. During the investigation, the officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the subject's breath and noted the subject's eyes were bloodshot. The subject stated he was looking for his sober friend, but had no idea where he was. The subject was taken into custody for Public Intoxication and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-01-10, at 2:32 AM. 2000 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Theft: A green SE Draft bicycle was stolen from the bike racks located on the north side of PCL after being secured with a self-locking cable lock. Loss value: $50.00. Occurred on: 5-01-10, between 12:30 AM and 3:30 AM. 2100 BLOCK GUADALUPE Theft: A Motorola pre-paid cellular telephone was stolen from a bus stop after being left unattended and unsecured. Loss value: $25.00. Occurred on: 5-01-10, between 12:45 PM and 12:50 PM. 2100 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD Criminal Mischief: A UT student was seen throwing rocks at a statue. During the investigation, the student informed the officer that he had grown up throwing rocks at objects that thought it was no big deal. The officer did not locate any points of contact on the statue. The subject was referred to the Dean of Student's office. Occurred on: 5-02-10, at 5:22 PM. 2300 BLOCK SAN JACINTO BLVD. Assist Outside Agency: A UT Police Officer observed a non-UT subject disregard several stop signs while riding a bicycle and making multiple hand gestures declaring the officer #1. During the traffic investigation, the officer soon discovered the subject had two outstanding Outside Agency arrest warrants… one warrant for Failure to Appear- Riding on a Busy Sidewalk and the other was for theft. The subject was taken into custody for the Outside Agency arrest warrants and was transported to Central Booking. Occurred on: 5-02-10, at 11:40 AM. 2500 BLOCK SPEEDWAY Criminal Trespass Warning: A UT student observed a known offender make a bee line to a secured bicycle and begin pulling on the lock in an attempt to remove the lock. When the subject saw the student standing there, he left the area. During the investigation, the officers located the subject a few blocks away. The subject was issued a written Criminal Trespass Warning and was escorted from campus. Occurred on: 5-01-10, at 11:33 PM. 2600 UNIVERSITY AVE Public Intoxication: A UT student was discovered laying on his back passed out. The officer detected a very strong odor of alcohol on the subject's person. The subject began moaning and would wake up for a short time then pass out. During one of these episodes the UT student began exhibiting the classical signs of an onset to a physical reaction to the over consumption of alcohol. After becoming void of any liquid libations, the student fluffed his creation and passed out head first. Austin EMS arrived at the scene and treated the subject for alcohol poisoning and transported his to a local area hospital for additional treatment. The investigating officer will have a summons sent to the student. Occurred on: 5-01-10, at 1:46 AM. Crime Prevention Tip of the Day: Many of you may be wondering why the subject on the bicycle was even stopped. Bicyclists, according to State Law, are considered vehicles and are required to follow the same laws as a motorized vehicle. When they fail to adhere to the traffic law, the rider can be issued a traffic ticket. Fail to take care of the ticket, and the judge will issue a warrant for that persons arrest. CAMPUS WIDE: Non-Criminal Calls: In addition to the above criminal cases, the University of Texas Police Department responded to 42 Alarm Calls, 3 Suspicious Activity reports, 4 EMS calls, 2 Callbox notifications, and 4 Unsecured Door Reports between 04/30/10 and 05/03/10.
